About the Item
Oil on Canvas. Italian school of the early 20th century.
The large scene is set in a desolate landscape completely covered in snow: on the left in the foreground, behind a group of wagons and mobile homes (probably a gypsy camp) a woman weeps peeking out from behind a tarp; she watches the figures walking away the center of the scene, only silhouettes but clearly definable: two gendarmes flank a man in plain clothes, evidently translated into arrest.
A lamppost and some dry, bare saplings occupy the space on the right.
The whole scene, painted with broad brushstrokes and without contours, is dominated by the grayish-white hues of the snow, the chalky sky, and the indistinct background peaks, i.e., all the naturalistic elements, including one of the two horses tied up at rest, while the other elements, the figures, the dwelling, the lampposts, the other horse, and even the footprints in the snow that trace the path of the three figures in the distance, are connoted by brown and ochre colors, rather dull: the whole emphasizes the drama of the scene, perhaps even the woman's despair and sense of loneliness and abandonment.
Restored and re-tinted, the painting appears unsigned on the front (possible signature on the back covered by the re-tinting?).
