Orientalist oil painting of the Moroccan city of Fez

1864

About the Item

This scene of the walled city of Fez in Morocco is populated by figures in small groups and within caravans of camels, bringing trade goods to and from the city. Lying below distant hills, Fez and its defensive walls dominate the middle ground of this work. The city sprawls behind its walls from one edge of the scene to the other. The setting is illuminated from the left by evening sunlight, which rakes the landscape and illuminates the ochre walls of the city, its minarets, and the left flank of the distant hills. The entire composition is evocative of 19th Century Fez, and the romantic, dimly lit early evening mood of the work is complemented by the colour palette utilised by the artist: burnt oranges and shades of turquoise blue predominate, granting an overall warm character to the painting. The painting is signed indistinctly, is labelled ‘Fez’, and is dated by the artist to 1864. Frame- Height 60cm, width 112cm, depth 4cm Canvas- Height 51cm, width 104cm, depth 2.5cm
