About the Item
I wish I could figure out who this super-talented artist of the 1800's "Mort R.", was. He painted this gorgeous swamp scene in 1872, but his signature did not include his last name and so we don't know who he was! At any rate, if you have ever visited Louisiana, or the Carolina coast, or even parts of Texas, you will understand how beautifully the artist has captured the special light coming up over a swamp early in the morning. A pirogue has been pulled up at the edge of a small island. The sun is just peeking over the horizon, gently shedding its subtle light. Comes in an exquisite gilt and plaster 19th century frame, with a few repairs but overall in very good shape for its age and delicateness. Dimensions are 34.75" x 45.5" framed, 24.5" x 35.25" unframed.

The Via Flaminia, a Sunday morning," 1869, with frame 160 x 83 cm. Signed P. Joris, Pio Joris attended the Istituto di Belle Arti in Rome and in 1861 he enrolled at the Accademia di San Luca, where he remained for just a year. On a visit to the 1st Esposizione Nazionale di Belle Arti of Florence in 1861 he was attracted by the naturalistic works from the Naples school. He came into contact with Domenico Morelli and Filippo Palizzi during a trip to Capri, Sorrento and Naples in 1866. In Rome, he kept company with Mariano Fortuny, whose painting, with its pleasant, captivating luministic effects, made a very strong impression on Joris. That was how he developed his own very personal artistic language, which went on to bring him remarkable commercial success on an international scale, helped by his collaboration with Paris art dealer...Category
