About the Item
The Ponte Nomentano (called Pons Lamentanus during the Middle Ages) is a Roman bridge in Rome, Italy, which carried the Via Nomentana over the Aniene (Latin: Anio). Having lain outside the city limits for most of its history, the picturesque bridge is noted for its medieval bridge tower, which served to protect this important northern approach to Rome; it was built at the foot of the Monte Sacro hill, a place crossed by the passage of transhumant herds since ancient times.
Together with the Milvian bridge and the Salario bridge, it was one of the most important extra-urban bridges in ancient Rome.
It was originally built with squared blocks of tuff, except for the travertine archivolts, and had 3 arches: the central one, larger than the other 2, overlooked the tributary of the Tiber.
In the 8th century, under the pontificate of Hadrian I, the bridge was fortified with two towers, which were in turn reinforced with walls in the 12th-13th century and built under Nicholas V.
The first construction dates back to the Republican age and the bridge was rebuilt after Totila's barbarian invasion.
A local tradition has a meeting on this bridge in the 19th century between Charlemagne and Leo III.
In the 10th century it belonged to the monastery of San Silvestro in Capite, then, from 1205, it belonged to the church of San Lorenzo in Lucina, then to the convent of San Pietro in Vincoli together with the church of Sant'Agnese outside the walls. In 1433 the bridge was occupied by Niccolò Fortebraccio della Stella and Antonio Count of Pontedera, while in 1485 the bridge was conquered by Paolo Orsini. It later had to undergo restorations and various adjustments.
During the period of the Pazzi Conspiracy the bridge was called "Iuxta Casale de' Pazzis" and included as a possession of this family.
It then underwent various changes of ownership until it became a city customs house in 1532, before undergoing new restoration and modification interventions.
In 1849 during the French invasion it suffered destruction. Seven years later, these destructions were repaired.
Until 1924, the year of the construction of the nearby Tazio bridge (which connects Via Nomentana Nuova with Corso Sempione), it constituted an obligatory connection between Rome and the areas north of the city. In 1997, for fear of damage to the structure, the bridge was closed to car traffic, becoming, since then, an exclusively pedestrian route. Restored in 2002, it is occasionally open to the public, who can visit the internal structures.
