Verquin Henri
Fauvist Mid Century Sea Landscape, La Barque Piraillan Basin d'Arcachon

About the Item

Mid Century Fauvist view of a port and seascape by Verquin Henri. Signed bottom right, titled, located and signed to the backboard. Presented in period mid century gilt wood and cloth frame with white wood slip. A colourful and chic painting of a boat lying at harbour surrounded by wooden mooring poles. In the distance is the lagoon and further yet the outline of surrounding hills. The use of greens, blues and mauves make for a bright and cheerful composition and structure is given by the upright poles and fencing. The eye is taken easily through the perspective and into the distance and the brightly coloured clouds in the sky. The location takes its name from old fish reservoirs modelled at the end of the 19th century from a natural depression (an "escourre"), linked to the Arcachon Bay. Fish are farmed in the reservoirs and the forest produces its wealth. Very old pines still bear traces of 'gemmage' (tapping for sap). The site was listed in 1943. The reserve of about 40 hectares is located at the exit of the village of Grand Piquey (peninsula of Lège Cap-Ferret) a few meters from the beaches of the Arcachon basin. It is a relaxing, invigorating area, repopulated by a local fauna that man had forced to move away and which today shows all its richness: Grey herons, black kites, swans as greedy as they are majestic, but also foxes, martens and many mammals.

  • The Jurassic Coast, Dorset.
    By Ruskin Spear
    Located in Cotignac, FR
An English watercolour on paper coastal scene signed with initials 'RS' bottom right. Presented in its original gilt wood frame under glass with trade label to the backboard from Deighton’s Strand Gallery. This gallery was well-known during the 1930s as fine art dealers and frame makers – it was located off Trafalgar square. Though he often signed with his full name Ruskin Spear's work on paper 'Hammersmith Grove' is signed in the same initials as our work and hence the attribution. This work is also stylistically similar to his other drawings of seascapes and coastal landscapes. This is a charming and fresh view of a coastal landscape probably the Jurassic coast of Dorset or his beloved Cornwall. The vertiginous composition gives it an angular almost abstract form highlighted by the contrast between the colour of the rockface, the vegetation and the blue sea. The work is in nice condition and wonderful to have the original framing. Initially influenced by Walter Sickert, the Camden Town Group...
