Thames Barges on the Medway with power station in background Large Oil Painting

20th century

About the Item

Vic Ellis RSMA Thames Barges and other Shipping. Oil on Board, Signed and Framed. Ellis lived in Essex and latterly spent his time painting shipping on the Thames and the Medway. He was an experienced sailor himself and loved depicting shipping in all types of conditions. His work is broad stroked and impressionistic with heavy impasto. This is a delightful large oil painting and the barges are centre stage with a beautiful jewel like sea in the foreground. Vic Ellis was a dental technician on Canvey Island and was given drawing and painting lessons by Harry Russell. He become a successful commercial artist and a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists, he was elected a member in 1969. He painted many shipping fleets for their owners and operators. Ellis painted mainly around the Thames Estuary and the East Anglian Coast and is a specialist on East Anglian small craft. Vic lived out his final years in Leigh on Sea. He is listed in "Dictionary of Sea Painters" and illustrated, see plate 766.
