More information below on both the artist and the location: The Artist: Victor Elford was a British landscape painter known both for his depictions of idyllic landscapes in England. Born in Devonshire, United Kingdom in 1911, Elford was largely self-taught. A pilot in the Royal Air Force during World War II, he was stationed in West Africa, during which time his work became more abstracted. Elford artist died in 2003. Today, his work can be found in the Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery in Devon. The Location: Cliveden is an English Estate and Country House managed by the National Trust in Buckinghamshire, bordering Berkshire. The Italianate mansion, also known as Cliveden House, sits atop a ridge in the Chiltern Hills near the villages of Burnham and Taplow in South Bucks. Positioned above the River Thames, the main house overlooks the river, with its grounds cascading down towards it. The site has seen three iterations of houses: the original built in 1666, which burned down in 1795, followed by a second house in 1824, destroyed by fire in 1849. The current Grade I listed house was constructed in 1851 by architect Charles Barry for the 2nd Duke of Sutherland. Over time, Cliveden has been inhabited by royalty and nobility, including a Prince of Wales, two Dukes, an Earl, and eventually the Viscounts Astor. Nancy Astor, wife of the 2nd Viscount Astor, made Cliveden the hub of the Cliveden Set during the 1920s and 1930s, a gathering of political intellectuals. In the early 1960s, while under the ownership of the 3rd Viscount Astor, it gained notoriety as the backdrop for key events of the Profumo affair. After the Astor family's departure, in the 1970s, it was leased to Stanford University, serving as an overseas campus. Presently, the house is leased to a company that operates it as a luxury five-star hotel.
