About the Item

Austria Landscape and wood Carved Frame Oil on Linen 1905 Historically significant wood work and wonderful landscape celebrating the Austrian landscape and forests in a hand carved wood frame by Wilhelm von Heydebrand and painting by Gertrude Von Heydebrand-Osthoff (Austia, 1888-1973. Frame is carved by and signed Wilhelm von Heydebrand; it isn't clear if he was the painter or Gertrude his future wife (married 1914) was the painting artist. Painting is signed H. v. G. 1905 lower rignt. (H. for Heydebrand and v. for von and G. for Gertrude) Wilhelm von Heydebrand (1888-1970) was a gold and silversmith who moved to Dornach in 1914 to help construct the Goetheanum, a building designed by Rudolf Steiner. He later became known for his craft work as a wood carver and jewelry designer. His granddaughter, Sibylle von Heydebrand, described his approach to jewelry making as involving a deep understanding of the personality of the future wearer, resulting in unique pieces that reflected their psychological nature. Duldeck, were in attics or sheds in Dornach as the value of these original items was evidently long overlooked. On New Year's Eve 1922, the First Goetheanum in Dornach, one of the most unusual buildings of its time, burned down; Only photos still bear witness to the impression of the building, which was only recently completed. The photographs were taken by Gertrud von Heydebrand-Osthoff, who trained as a painter and was the wife of Wilhelm von Heydebrand. Wilhelm von Heydebrand's wife, Gertrud von Heydebrand-Osthoff, was also an artist and worked as a carver at the first Goetheanum. She later became known for her photographs of Rudolf Steiner. The Goetheanum, designed by Rudolf Steiner, was a unique building that showcased his architectural theories and incorporated elements of organic and functional design. It featured carved wood, reinforced concrete, watercolor murals, and engraved colored-glass windows, all of which aimed to visually represent the metaphysical ideas of Steiner's anthroposophy. Anthroposophy is a philosophy that emphasizes the spiritual element and the idea that each individual has a role to play in society. It has its own scientific approach and encompasses various fields such as economics, politics, medicine, biology, agriculture, and art. Introduced by Rudolf Steiner in the early 20th century, anthroposophy has been criticized for its association with esoteric cults. In the context of design, anthroposophy is also known as the Dornach Style and is characterized by an emphasis on woodwork, geometrical shapes, and graphic angles.

High Sierras Log Cabin Lodge Original Oil Painting by J. Bond Francisco Early 1900s era impasto painting of the High Sierras and a Log Cabin Lodge by California artist John Bond Francisco (American, 1863 - 1931). From an early age Francisco was drawn to both music and art. He studied the violin with Hermann Eckhardt and painting at the Cincinnati Art Academy for several years. He arrived in Los Angeles in 1887 and was so taken with the beauty of the place, he opted to make it his home. He soon continued his studies in Berlin, Munich, and in Paris at Académies Julian and Colarossi under Courtois, Bouguereau, and Robert-Fleury. While in Europe he studied the violin in the morning hours and painting in the afternoon. Upon returning to Los Angeles in 1892, he married and built a home at 1401 Albany Street where he lived for the rest of his life. Combining an art and music career, he helped form the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra in 1897 and served as their first concert master. While teaching music and art at his studio, he made painting excursions into the surrounding countryside, often with his pupil Elmer Wachtel. He combined his Munich technique with that of the Barbizon's influence to produce paintings of California deserts and mountains that held dramatic light and shade contrasts. Later his palette brightened and he leaned more toward Impressionism. Francisco's studio in the Blanchard Bldg and his home were a mecca for both painters and musicians until his death on Jan. 8, 1931. Member: American Artists Club (Munich); Calif.
