William Mark Fisher
!9th century Impressionist landscape with a horse and cart in a Village

circa 1890

About the Item

Outstanding late 19th century English Impressionist landscape, with a horse and cart in a village. Described in 1893 by George Moore as "our greatest living landscape painter," William Mark Fisher was born in Boston and studied there at the Lowell Institute under George Inness. He traveled to Paris in 1861 and studied with Gleyre and was influenced by the landscapes of Corot. In 1872, Fisher moved to England and began exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy and the New England Art Club. The artist was awarded a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889. He began as a genre and portrait painter but spent most of his career painting landscapes. William Mark Fisher was elected a full Royal Academician in 1919 and his 1920 diploma work An Orchard in Spring is in the collection of the Royal Academy. Among the numerous other museum collections that include paintings by Fisher are Tate Britain, the Manchester City Art Gallery, the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff, and the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia. This piece is a beautiful example of the artist's work. He has painted a very desirable piece and the paintings show all the skill in how the painter used thick and thin paint to achieve an almost 3d image. The painting is framed in a vintage English frame.

  • American Impressionist: Springtime, a sunny path in France 19thC oil painting
    By William Baptiste Baird
    Located in Norwich, GB
This beautiful and light filled painting testifies of a new dawn: in the 1880s the landscape and animalier artist William Baird turns to Impressionism. Our Sunny Path, with looser brushwork and lighter colours, convey the fleeting nature of the present. Our lovely oil on canvas may well be homage to Claude Monet - according to Baird's inscription on the stretcher, it was painted in Mantes, which is only about 6 miles from Vétheuil, where Monet was living and working in the 1880s! William Baptiste Baird was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1847, but as an adult moved to Paris to perfect his painting technique. In Paris, Baird studied under Adolphe Yvon...
