A lovely river landscape painting of the river Wharfe, Yorkshire by William Mellor. To the right, two sheep are shown grazing near the river bank whilst the rest of the flock remains behind in the meadow. On the opposite side, a small herd of cattle can be seen watering by the trees.
William Mellor was a landscape painter who was born in Barnsley, Yorkshire in 1851, the son of Joseph Mellor, an artist and Mary Mellor. Initially, he was employed as a loom turner in the weaving industry before becoming a professional artist. He would have received tuition from his father who clearly influenced his style and subject matter.
In 1876, he married Mary Elizabeth Watson and by 1881 had established himself as a successful landscape painter. Two of his sons Everett Watson Mellor (1878-1965) and Leonard Mellor (b.1891) also became artists. The family lived in Barwick Street, Scarborough before moving to Sefton Street, North Meols. However, by 1911, they had moved to Dragon Road, Harrogate where Mellor later died in 1931.
Mellor worked around his home county capturing views of Ilkley, Scarborough and Harrogate. He also travelled frequently to North Wales and the West Country and his paintings were often of river views, as in this fine example. Mellor's meticulously drawn landscapes are very distinctive, usually depicting scenes in summer and early autumn.
Many of his paintings can be found in public collections including the Harris Museum, Laing Art Gallery, Russell-Cotes Art Gallery, Towneley Hall Art Gallery and The Whitaker.
Presentation: The painting is housed in its original gilt frame which is in excellent condition.

William Mellor
William Mellor is best known for his landscapes of woodland with streams and hills in rural Wales, England and Scotland. He has a particular talent for detail with soft sunbathed light, filtering through trees in wood and golden tones. He worked and lived in Yorkshire, the Lake District, Scarborough and Wales, away from the artistic centers of London and Edinburgh/Glasgow. Mellor was the son of artist Joseph Mellor, who flourished as an artist from 1850, and the years following the birth of his son William in 1851. He died in 1885. Joseph Mellor painted woodlands and rural landscapes, sharing much of his style with his son. Both father and son excelled in creating atmospheric rural scenes with soft light, with Mellor especially developing the golden tones of autumn in his work. While William Mellor did not exhibit widely his work was renowned regionally. His plein art style renders a tenderness in simple rural scenes rather than the dramatic mountains and landscapes of other artists of his time. His work, and that of his father, continues to be popular among collectors of fine 19th century landscapes today.

- Pair of 19th century landscape oil paintings of the River Avon & Berwyn ValleyBy John Bates NoelLocated in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire**PLEASE NOTE: EACH PAINTING INCLUDING THE FRAME MEASURES 19 INCHES X 23 INCHES** John Bates Noel British, (1870-1927) On the Avon & In the Berwin Valley Oil on canvas, pair, both signed, also signed & inscribed verso Image size: 12 inches x 16 inches (each) Size including frame: 19 inches x 23 inches (each) John Bates Noel was born John Noel Bates in Worcester in 1870. He was the son of the landscape artist David Bates (1840-1921) but later on changed his professional name to avoid confusion. The family lived in Worcestershire as well as in Birmingham and it was highly likely that he was encouraged and taught by his father as their subject matter and style bear similarities, although John’s compositions tend to be more fluid and looser. By the turn of the century Noel was living in Malvern where he also taught art. He specialised in painting the rugged landscapes in and around the West Midlands, Worcestershire and North Wales. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1893-1909 and at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists between 1892-1919. He also exhibited works at some of the major galleries of the time including the Manchester City Art Gallery and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. The building in the painting 'On the Avon' is believed to be that of St Margaret's Church at Wolston in Warwickshire. The structures at the front of the church appear to be thatched hay ricks, which are similar to ones seen in an old postcard of the church seen from the river Avon...Category
