María Luisa de Mendoza
Un Mirador En La Torre De Oro

2020

About the Item

She paints the city, but none in particular; she has memories and experiences as a spectator from all of them. In her paintings, every corner could belong to any place in the world; they don't have identifying signs that place them in any specific location. This gives a more universal character to all her works. She paints while looking curiously upwards, and there she finds those typical little ladders on rooftops that lead to some enigmatic place, antennas, smoking chimneys, balconies... crowning the city, so solitary, so detached from the world and everything happening down below. Because down below, everything changes and transforms as quickly as we walk, always in a hurry. Up above, however, time stands still, and this gives her a pleasant feeling of tranquility. Her work conveys to the viewer a less realistic aspect of the city, more intimate, more poetic, ultimately more metaphysical. She seeks the essence, to convey sensations and transport the viewer to lost corners of the soul; to a new way of seeing and feeling the city and to delve into its intimate meaning. It is a journey to the spiritual. She is inspired by the work of Hopper, feeling great admiration for metaphysical painters (Chirico, Carrà, Tanguy, ...). Realism no longer interests her as such. She seeks something more, a new way of seeing and feeling the city and delving into its intimate meaning. Regarding color, she works in planes; each of them is like an abstract painting with numerous shades, sometimes almost imperceptible. But it's not exactly the color that concerns her the most in her works, but rather the light.

    By Stephanie Peek
    Located in Burlingame, CA
Stephanie Peek's "Uniform Language" Camo paintings showcasing an assortment of worldwide camouflage (both historic and contemporary) from countries around the world. The complete installation includes 52 original works that are each 10 x 10 inches. Can be hung in an assortment of ways. The artwork comes with a template for installation as shown below. The series started following 9/11 with the bombing of the World Trade Center in NY. and continues to today. Stephanie Peek's "Uniform Language" is a constellation of small painting on alabaster-coated wood panels featuring camouflage patterns of nations worldwide. Peek’s fascination with these patterns stems from her observation of nature (including her studies of flowers, for which the artist is well known), and compositions of shapes and color relationships. When hung in the configuration shown, the overall dimension is 77 inches tall x 132 inches wide. The artwork can hang in a variety of configurations. Each camp painting is 10 x 10 inches. Fascinated by how various countries use camouflage patterns to represent and to disguise themselves and their military equipment, the artist explores how countries see themselves in this pattern language that speaks of power and fear, while also considering each painting a prayer for peace. Artist's statement, Early in the 20th century, the United States military adapted the nature studies of American painter Abbot Thayer...
