José Palmeiro Martínez was a Spanish painter and lithographer, from the School of Paris, born in Madrid on August 19, 1903 and died in Bergerac, France, on March 15, 1984.
Of Galician roots, the data on the birth of José Palmeiro remain imprecise: although those stated here are those generally accepted, there are certain sources that affirm that he was born in 1901 and that he is a native of Betanzos (Galicia).
At the age of 18, he worked in the workshops of the newspaper El Sol where his drawings were published. José Palmeiro arrived in Paris in 1925 where he settled in the Montparnasse neighborhood. He became friends with Celso Lagary and is part of the group of Spanish painters from the School of Paris. He also established friendships with Ginés Parra and Óscar Domínguez.
After having been a permanent artist at the Élysée Gallery, the years 1945-1946 were for José Palmeiro holding various exhibitions in the company of other Spanish artists from the School of Paris. In 1947 he began a ten-year stay in South America . The Bénézit dictionary and Gérald Schurr agree in seeing the year 1948 when Palmeiro breaks with his past and ceases to be the painter of the jeunes filles espagnoles en fleur to orient himself, in a post-impressionist and post-cubist heritage, towards the landscape and nature dead.
With his friend Ginés Parra, José Palmeiro was part of the group of artists from Alba-la-Romaine, a town in the Ardèche that André Lhote brought back from oblivion.
