About the Item

During his long artistic existence, Sierk Schröder (1903- 20020 produced an extensive and multifaceted oeuvre. Without a doubt he was the most important and in demand portrait painter of the twentieth century. He was commissioned to paint the portraits of many prominent figures from various sectors of Dutch society and beyond. He also painted many family portraits, including child and baby portraits. Impressive is his free work in which the human figure is central. In addition, he produced nude and nature studies, landscapes, free portraits and self-portraits. Besides oil paintings, he made watercolors, pastels, including the masterful pastels on unprepared linen from his later years, and charcoal drawings. For Sierk Schröder there was a constant field of tension between accepting commissions for portraits, with which he was overwhelmed, and making free work. Finding a balance between the two was often oppressive. In defiance of all the trends which emerged, particularly after the Second World War, Sierk Schröder remained true to tradition. Endlessly, in his constant pursuit of the highest quality and the shifting and combining of traditional boundaries to his own time, he continued to make drawings, studies and sketches. These exercises, the leitmotif of his artistic existence, enabled him to create an impressive and highly individual oeuvre. More and more often Sierk Schröder is mentioned as the painter, draughtsman, who formed a bridge between tradition and the contemporary revaluation of figurative painting, including portraiture. This partly explains the large and ever-growing interest in his work. From 1960 to 1968 Sierk Schröder was Professor of Free Painting at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. In 1964 Sierk Schröder was appointed Officer in the Order of Orange Nassau, in 2000 Ridder in the Order of the Dutch Lion. The painting was part of a Dutch Art Collection.
