Ryonosuke Fukui
Japanese Oil Painting Realism & Surrealism Ryonosuke Fukui Nude

1980

About the Item

Fukui began his artistic career in post-war occupied Japan as an innovator in Japanese prints by producing work utilizing his unique mimeographic process. Though he was very active in creating over 200 different designs, the time of his print production was short-lived, representing only ten years between 1955-1965. Painting became his sole focus after 1965, and strictly dedicated himself to producing oils on canvas. Fukui discovered his artistic voice in the short years of his print production. He was fascinated by texture and light and found his experimentation with landscapes rewarding. For Fukui, the space created within his work was of chief importance, while, in contrast, the subjects of his compositions were secondary. Fukui once described his aesthetic objective to his friend and fellow painter Shin Miyazaki as follows: “What I really want to depict is something like soil or space. So, I’d rather not have the forms that are in my works. Forms of objects manifest themselves from the stains I depict. Life and death are perceived from the patches on the wall or from the space. Only then do objects and forms spontaneously appear before the eyes of viewers.” This magnificent painting reflects the artist’s well-articulated mature style. The composition pays careful attention to the ornate and detailed background. Quilt-like in its effect, the artist stitches together varying colors and textures and interlaces them with light and shadow. Delicate fine lines appear like cracks throughout, giving this work a striking psychological quality. The nude appears to emerge directly from this sumptuous space delineated by Fukui. This striking painting is among the artist's best works on this subject. The painting boasts gold metallic pigments that greatly contribute to the work’s fascinating use of light. The piece is signed by the artist in the lower left corner.

  • Oil on Canvas Japanese Pop Artist Tadashi Asoma Reclining Nude
    By Tadashi Asoma
    Located in Wilmette, IL
Tadashi Asoma was a Japanese-American painter. Born in Japan in 1923, his career began when, in 1958, the Japanese government awarded him a scholarship to study painting in Paris. After Paris, Asoma visited the United States and became fascinated with the current American style of painting. He eventually moved to New York, near the East Village, where he studied and worked for three years. Asoma did return to Japan for a period of time, however, he moved to New York permanently in 1961 and stayed in the region until his passing in 2017. This early work by Asoma displays the American influence that so enamored him when he first visited the United States. Rendered in flat and discrete sections of bold color, the impressive composition bears an interesting relation to the work of Pop artist Tom Wesselmann. Much like Wesselmann’s work, Asoma builds his image with applications of bold and flat color, often isolating and highlighting sections of the composition, bringing the viewer’s eye to these discrete sections. In this work, a green bed...

  • The Bather by Childe Hassam
    By Childe Hassam
    Located in New Orleans, LA
Childe Hassam 1859-1935 American The Bather Signed and dated “Childe Hassam” (lower right) Oil on canvas Considered by many to be America’s foremost Impressionist painter, Childe Hassam composed his tranquil and intimate oil on canvas The Bather in the early years of the 20th century. The creation of the artwork aligns with a period of Hassam’s career where the artist’s palette was transforming, matching ever closer with the pale and pastel hues of French Impressionists like Claude Monet. Even the subject — a nude woman — represents a greater alignment with the Impressionist project, as artists of the movement and their non-mythological and non-biblical nudes still generated cries of indecency. With Hassam’s signature brushwork and attention to color, The Bather serves as a dream-like vision, serene and sensuous, of a young woman bathing in a lush forest. While the artist's skill for landscape painting is on display, it is Hassam's command of form, light and color that brings this canvas to life. He creates a captivating composition, placing the nude subject in the bottom left of the canvas. The soft, undulating curves of the woman's body in contrapposto and the glow of her fair skin are balanced by the strong verticals and deep earth tones of the tall trees to her right. Hassam delicately frames the nude in the vivid blues of the distant water, building luminous color that further draws the viewer’s eye and results in a somewhat voyeuristic appeal — endowing his nude with both a natural innocence and an intentional sensuality. Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Childe Hassam began his artistic career as a freelance illustrator, working for national publications such as Harper’s Weekly, Scribner’s Monthly, and The Century. His first solo exhibition of watercolors took place in Boston in 1883, and he quickly catapulted onto the international scene, winning a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889. The year before the present work was created, he received the Webb Prize from the Society of American Artists for another landscape painted at Gloucester. Hassam would receive numerous other awards throughout his career, most notably the Gold Medal for Distinguished Services to Fine Art from the American Dealers Association. A true master, Hassam depicted a way of life characteristic of both American and French society, and his work elucidates a critical chapter in American art history. Today, his work resides in the Oval Office of the White House and in numerous important museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, among others. This painting will be included in Stuart P. Feld's and Kathleen M. Burnside's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work.
