About the Item
The Annunciation
Circle of Paolo De Matteis (Piano Vetrale, 1662 - Naples, 1728)
oil painting on canvas (106 x 90 cm - with frame 118 x 103 cm.)
The work, of high decorative value and certainly commissioned as an object of private devotion, shows the moment of the supreme Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, an evangelical episode set here on the two figures portrayed in the foreground, the Archangel Gabriel with spread wings, depicted with white lilies symbolizing purity, and the young Virgin kneeling before him, observing him as a sign of devotion.
Of great expressiveness is the detail of the lectern of the virgin, made with a particular carving that sees a winged female figure with bare breasts, as well as the skill with which the drapery of the garments were rendered, especially of the angel.
Observing the high-quality stylistic features, both from the point of view of compositional invention and from the point of view of execution, and the elegance, albeit simple, of the design, we are oriented towards bringing the area of origin closer to a painter of Neapolitan matrix between the end of the seventeenth century and the beginning of the following century.
In particular, it easily approaches the stylistic outcome of Paolo De Matteis (Piano del Cilento, 1662 - Naples, 1728), Neapolitan of origin but who from 1682 to 1683 lived in Rome, a necessary experience given that in those years the artistic culture recorded a happy oscillation between a luminous baroque language, with Cortonese influences, and the overcoming of naturalism in the name of an adherence to the new style imported from Giordano.
Author who will mark the development of eighteenth-century Neapolitan art, his works have a strong narrative tone and a strong sentimental and emotional charge.
The characteristics of the canvas, for the treatment of light and of the figures, could trace the work back to the artist's classicist period, therefore right between the two centuries.
Excellent storage conditions.

- Portrait Noblewoman Dog Van Loo Paint 18th Century Oil on canvas Old master ArtLocated in Riva del Garda, ITLouis Michel van Loo (Toulon 1707- Paris 1771) attributable Portrait of a noblewoman with her little dog Oil on canvas (79 x 66 cm. - with frame 92 x 78 cm.) A qualitative portrait depicting an elegant noblewoman of French origin, presumably belonging to the wealthy court of Versailles during the reign of Louis XV; this work fully reflects the pictorial qualities as well as the refinement of the compositional style of the French painter Louis Michel van Loo (1707- 1771), one of the most significant portrait painters of his time, and for this reason in demand at the most noble European courts. The work, taking up the traditional formula for portraits of members of the aristocracy, shows the effigy in a half-length pose, slightly turned to the right and looking directly at the viewer. The woman, with a regal bearing, is here portrayed intent on completing her daily beauty ritual, wearing a cape during her make-up, which must have just been completed as pink powder is visible on her cheeks. This luxurious garment reveals a corset with a daring neckline, made of silk and lace, and a coral-coloured dress ending in wide jabote cuffs. Her hair is styled in the French fashion in a hairstyle that highlights her facial features. Having finished her beauty ritual, the woman is intent on removing her cape with one hand, an elegant gesture that emphasises her noble pose. At her side is her small pet dog, sitting on a blue velvet cushion with gold trim. The canvas may have been made on the occasion of a wedding, elegantly celebrating the role of a member of the aristocracy. The presence of the pet depicted in her arms had in fact a precise meaning: the fidelity that is such a well-known characteristic of the dog, declared at the same time the virtues of the effigy. Louis Michel van Loo (Toulon 1707- Paris 1771) was the son of the painter Jean Baptiste van Loo, with whom he studied in Rome and Turin. He attended the Paris Academy, where he won the first prize for painting in 1726. In 1728 he returned to Rome, where he met Francois Boucher. In 1732, passing through Turin, he returned to Paris. In 1737 van Loo became court painter in Madrid, succeeding Jean Ranc...Category

- Saint John Evangelist Paint Oil on canvas Old master 18th Century French SchoolLocated in Riva del Garda, ITSaint John the Evangelist French school of the eighteenth century Oil painting on canvas 82 x 64 cm. - in frame 102 x 84 cm. In this pleasant painting we see the portrait of the evangelist John, holding a pen in his hand while writing the pages of the Gospel, while behind him it is possible to recognize the profile of an eagle, his typical iconographic attribute. The graceful face, which still reveals the devout attitude, which gives the painting a more intimate and delicate, not excessive religiosity, is one of the typical characteristics for works intended for domestic devotion, as in the case of this Saint John. From the representation of the Saint the freshness of his features immediately stands out, he is in fact portrayed as young and handsome: and it is precisely this iconographic peculiarity that makes the work fascinating and very pleasant, probably commissioned for a private room. The painting presents the peculiarities of eighteenth-century French portraiture, characterized by a soft drawing and a wise use of light. The rather marked chiaroscuro and well-calibrated shades produce an excellent result thanks to the play of light on the face, highlighted by the dark background of the scene. The painting has been relined and is in an excellent state of conservation with the colors still bright and a very healthy pictorial layer. The painting is sold together with a nice golden frame.
