Amy Julia Drucker
Family Portrait in Market - British 1914 art Post Impressionist oil painting

1914

About the Item

This charming early twentieth century Post Impressionist portrait oil painting is by British Jewish female artist Amy Julia Drucker. Of German descent, Drucker was born in England in 1873. In the foreground of the painting is a portrait of a tight knit family group of a mother and father and five young children. Their gaze and focus is on each other rather than their surrounds. They are in a covered market with vegetable stalls and numerous figures beyond. The London skyline can be seen through the market windows. Although painted in a muted palette, the family stand out in their reds and blues and there is the vivid green of vegetables on a stall. The market is believed to be Whitechapel - Marchment Street. This painting is a real conversation piece as one imagines who the little family are and their circumstances. A charming painting by a talented British Jewish female artist. A similar later variant titled For He Had Great Possessions is with the Ben Uri Gallery. Signed lower right. Provenance. Somerset estate. James Bourlet Exhibition transit label verso. It is ascribed verso that this was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1914 as A Street Market Whitechapel. Condition. Oil on canvas, 28 inches by 24 inches unframed and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a complementary frame 35 inches by 31 inches framed and in good condition. Amy Julia Drucker (1873-1951) was a British artist and educator of Jewish descent. Jean-Gabriel Domergue 1889-1962 French Josianna, jeune femme au ruban (Josianna, Young Woman With Ribbon) Signed "Jean Gabriel Domergue" (lower left) Oil on panel A young French beauty known as Josianna is the subject of this work by Jean-Gabriel Domergue, and the oil on panel is a perfect example of the portraits for which the artist is renowned. His model embodies the concept of the la belle Parisienne: slender, swan-like women bearing an unmistakable grace and style. Domergue includes a delicate pink ribbon around her neck, suggesting a fashionable garment, set against a soft pastel-colored backdrop. The artist's oeuvre encompasses women from all facets of society, from aristocratic figures such as Liane de Pougy and Nadine, Baroness de Rothschild...
