About the Item
The underlying body of work is an exploration of texturizing distortion as a language of expression. The works explore an awaking of an Afrocentric consciousness connected to gender, power, and the human condition, depicting them on a figurative portrait subject to document stories that encompass the emotion and demeanor as well as individuals’ uniqueness.
The work addresses the complex intersectionality that Africans face in different facets of life and the diaspora. The works are Inspired by an ability to communicate intricate ideas about identity and personality. The attention to each figure portrait is personal fashion expressed through bold textiles.

- About Artist
Ashola'sa Daniel (B 1996) is an artist that resides and works in Lagos. He graduated from Yaba College of Technology where he received a Higher National Diploma in Art, majoring in painting.
Daniel is a multifaceted artist who depicts his stories through textured surfaces alluding to the complexities of life as he knows it in Nigeria and other parts of Africa and her diaspora. He derives his inspiration directly from the environment around him as well as pulling from his imagination of a western world that he has been exposed to through globalization. As an artist, Daniel's ethos is to mesh themes of the representation of black bodies with societal depictions of these said bodies. He documents the black body and how it is pulled this way and that across the globe. Central themes of his pieces are socialization, struggle, culture, and the African diaspora.
Daniel through his works challenges detrimental theories and notions of black skin that stem from the westernized patriarchal system and have been filtered through the lens of racism.
He emphasizes the aspect of comfort, tenderness, lightness, and freedom through bodily expression and staged composition of the landscape. People's emotions are rarely put into words, for they are expressed through other cues.
Currently, he works full-time as an artist striving and pushing to bring his work to a larger audience. Daniel participated in the ‘IAM that IAM’ exhibition in New York which is curated by Michael Hyman.
