Charles Pachter
Queen on Moose

1988

About the Item

Charles Pachter (b. 1942) is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. His iconic, uplifting, and patriotic images have independently earned their place in the nation's museums and the Canadian art canon. The Barn, along with Queen Elizabeth and the Moose, forms a triad of icons that Charles Pachter has repeatedly visited over the course of his career. Playful and a touch irreverent, Pachter's charming imagery presents a new narrative on Canadiana. The artist’s vast body of work includes painting, sculpture, printmaking, and drawing. Pachter’s works are widely sought-after and are an ideal selection for starting or continuing a collection of 20th-century Canadian art. Pachter's confident colors, sharp lines, and graphic qualities are instantly recognizable and continue to be a mainstay throughout his oeuvre. Every artist has their muse and for Pachter, Queen Elizabeth is an icon that he has revisited and reimagined over the course of his career. This playful piece depicts Queen Elizabeth mounted on a moose, a moment that illuminates the cheeky earnestness that runs throughout much of Pachter's portrait work. This amusing combination has been repeated throughout his oeuvre and across mediums. Click here and here for examples of the duo in Pachter's prints. Pachter's work is represented in both public and private collections across Canada including the Art Gallery of Ontario, The Portrait Gallery of Canada, The Royal Ontario Museum, and the McMichael Gallery. In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Pachter holds the prestigious position of Officer of the Order of Canada and is also a recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee medal.
