'Ginette', French Art Deco Portrait

1932

About the Item

French oil on canvas portrait of a young beauty by Charles Alexandre René Picart Le Doux. Signed and dated bottom right. There is an exhibition label with number and title 'Ginette' applied to the rear stretcher. Presented in plain gilt wood frame. A charming and characterful portrait of a young girl in a fine dress, velvet ribbon to her neck and fashionable short haircut. Her soulful eyes have been beautifully captured by the artist as have the tones to her skin. A very accomplished and engaging portrait, one can feel the connection between the sitter and the artist. Le Doux was born July 12, 1881 in the 14th arrondissement of Paris and died September 11, 1959 in the 14th arrondissement of the same city was is a French painter, engraver also a poet and writer. The descendant of an old Parisian family. The painter's grandfather, Louis Charles Auguste, was a glass painter and executed, among other things, the large south rose window of Notre Dame de Paris. Friend of Corot, Vernet and Gauthier, it was through him that the young Charles was introduced to drawing. Charles Picart le Doux studied at the Janson de Sailly high school before definitively committing to an artistic career by first taking courses at the Académie Julian then at the Beaux-Arts in Paris until 1902. The painter lived in Montmartre and frequented the Agile Rabbit where he met Suzanne Valadon and her son Maurice Utrillo and created friendships with René Arcos, Charles Vildrac, Georges Duhamel, Jules Romains with which he will support the group of the Abbey in Créteil, but also with Pierre Mac Orlan, Luc Durtain, Francis Carco, etc. From 1903 he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, of which he became a member, then at the Salon des Indépendants and that of the Tuileries. In 1905 he painted a portrait and then a nude of Misia Sert. He exhibited once again at the Salon d'Automne of 1906. The interest aroused by his first paintings led the BLOT gallery in Paris to devote the first major exhibition to him. The Vildrac gallery opened its doors to him, soon followed by many others in France. It was with many of his friends mentioned above that he actively participated in the election and then the reception of Jean Pierre Brisset "prince of thinkers" on April 13, 1913, a memorable hoax initiated by Jules Romains. In the same spirit, and the same year, Picart le Doux became a member of the UMBM (Union Maritime de la Butte Montmartre) chaired by Pierre Le Prou and whose club house was established by the owner of the hotel restaurant "le Tertre" a Mr. Bouscarat who opened a room on the first floor for them. This room overlooking the Place du Tertre was quickly transformed into a museum, exhibiting books, nautical charts, model boats, nets, out of order navigation instruments, herring hanging in a birdcage and two skulls under a globe, one of child, the other adult bearing the label "Christopher Columbus at 7 years old" and on the other 'the same at his death'. Unlike the nautical clubs of the time, this one was open and even strongly recommended to ladies. At this time he also taught at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. During the First World War, Picart le Doux was drafted into the army where he worked as a medical orderly in the trenches. where sadly he was wounded. In the 1920s, Picart Le Doux exhibited in Paris, at the Charpentier and Drouant-David galleries. Museums from around the world acquired 23 canvases (Paris, New York, Moscow, Tokyo (imperial collection) In 1921, he befriended Aristide Maillol. In 1933, Charles Picart Le Doux received the Legion of Honor. He had various exhibitions that year in France and Luxembourg, in particular. In the years 1934-1939, he decorated part of the salons of the liner Le Normandie and the Hélène Bouchet high school in Paris. He won the Gold Medal of the International exhibition. He held a major exhibition at the Charpentier gallery, inaugurated by the Ministers of National Education and Fine Arts. He illustrated a large number of authors: Albert Samain (Hyalis), Charles Vildrac (Livre d'amour), Georges Duhamel, Jules Romains and Pierre Mac Orlan. During the Second World War, the painter settled in Touraine. He stayed first with Jules Romains in Saint-Avertin, then in Tours, where he decorated the prefecture and painted more than a hundred paintings and portraits. After the war, he returned to Paris to his studio in rue Boisonade. He participated in the decoration of the town hall of the 14th arrondissement and held exhibitions in Saint-Nazaire, Angers, Amiens, Moulin, Besançon, Rouen and Caen in particular, at the museum of Metz and Nancy and abroad, in San Francisco and Oslo. The State commissioned a painting, 'The Poets of the Abbey' from him (Jules Romains, Georges Duhamel, Charles Vildrac, Luc Durtain). He held his last exhibition at the Mariac gallery in 1959.

  • A Chinese Company playing Droughts
    Located in Amsterdam, NL
ERWIN BINDEWALD (1897-1950) Two men playing draughts, a girl with the red book standing behind them Signed and dated E. Bindewald d.j., 27 Oil on canvas, 140.5 x 90.5 cm In black and gilt gesso frame. Note: Bindewald was born in Charlottenburg. He moved to Berlin in 1914 where he studied till 1924 at the Berliner Kunst Akademie. Bindewald travelled in Europe, but mainly stayed in Germany and certainly never was in China. This painting was made in Europe, presumably in the China Town of Berlin. Bindewald received several commisions in Germany from factory owners who wanted their factories painted inside, usually with workers, as well as outside. In the present painting the sitter on the right seems to be a man with a Manchurian background, wearing the brown coat reserved for the highest aristocracy in China. In China the black sleeve-ends completely cover the hands, indicating that the high aristocracy does not have to do any manuel labour. This man clearly is not a factory worker but he possibly is the (co)- owner of the factory in the background and as such might need his hands to do at least some writing. The man on the left in the modern Western suit...

This portrait of Fannie Hurst may have graced the cover of another major newsstand magazine. Most likely, it was a non-published alternate cover for Redbook. Edna Crompton was an in-demand and prolific for-hire female illustrator/artist for some of the most prestigious newsstand magazines of the day. She regularly did covers for the Saturday Evening Post, Redbook, Colliers and Judge to name a few. Crompton presents Fannie Hurst - the nation’s highest-paid short story writer and advocates for suffrage and race relations - as a confidently attractive young woman bathed...
