About the Item
This captivating post-Impressionist portrait is by American artist David L Swasey circa 1953. The painting depicts a seated woman, turning to look at the artist with stunning blue eyes. Painted with very fluid post-Impressionist brushwork and a superb example of his work.
Signed lower left David L Swasey.
Provenance. Essex estate.
Condition. Oil on canvas. Image size 30 inches by 25 inches and in excellent condition.
Housed in a fine frame, 40 inches by 35 inches and in excellent condition.
David L Swasey (1909-1977). Swasey, studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Philadelphia, and the National Academy of Design. He had his works exhibited in France and at the National Academy of Design and the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh. He was a member of the Essex Art Association of Essex Connecticut. The Essex Art Association, housed in a historic Essex building, has served the Shoreline area as a non-profit seasonal art gallery since 1946. They were the first local art association to embrace all styles of art, from the traditional to the cutting edge. Swasey mainly painted portraits. He died at his Essex home aged 68.
