About the Item

This lovely British Victorian portrait oil painting is by British portrait artist Edward Spilsbury Swinson. It was painted in 1891 and is dated and signed lower right. It is a half length profile portrait of a dark haired woman in a gold/brown dress with red lipstick and ruby earrings. She is set against a port coloured background. One can see the influence of Whistler and French portraiture. The brushwork of the dress and tonality of the painting are superb, as is the soft focus on her face. A lovely British Victorian oil painting with great warmth. Signed and dated E. Swinson (18)91 lower right. Provenance. Essex estate. Condition. Oil on canvas in good condition, 24 inches by 20 inches unframed. Frame. Housed in a fine Watts gilded oak frame, 31 inches by 27 inches framed. Edward Spilsbury Swinson (1871-1958) was a Victorian born British portrait artist who worked mainly in oils. He signed his works E Swinson.
