Edyth Starkie
Portrait of Major General Harding Steward - British 19thC military oil painting

1890

About the Item

This striking British 19th century portrait oil painting is by noted established Irish female artist Edyth Starkie. She studied at the Slade School as well as the Académie Julian in Paris. Starkie also later studied in Germany where she was briefly engaged to a Prussian officer and caused a scandal when she broke it off due to his stiff Prussian attitudes. She later married fantasy artist Arthur Rackham in 1903. This strong and confident half length military portrait is of major General Harding Steward and was painted in 1890. He is dressed in his red military uniform with wonderful brass buttons and gold lapels as well as two medals on his chest. The detail in his face and sensitive brushwork are superb. This is an excellent example of Starkie's work and a really vibrant Victorian portrait by a noted Irish female artist. Signed and dated 1890 upper right and with paper label verso signed 'Steward', Provenance. Artists label verso Condition. Oil on canvas, 30 inches by 25 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in an oak gilt Watts frame, 39 inches by 34 inches and in good condition. Edyth Starkie (1867-1941) was an establish Irish portrait painter who was married to Arthur Rackham. She was born on the west coast of Ireland at Westcliff House, County Galway. The youngest of six, she spent most of her youth at Creggane Manor, Rosscarbery, near Cork where her father, William Robert Starkie JP (1824–1897), was a resident magistrate, who had also taught himself to play the violin. Her youthful behavior was said to be so wild and outrageous that at Mass in Skibbereen the parish priest denounced her, along with her cousin Fanny, from the pulpit. In 1883, at the age of sixteen, she set off with her mother (Frances Maria Starkie) for London. There, Edyth enrolled at the Slade School, one of Europe's most progressive art schools. In 1884, she moved to Paris to study art at the Académie Julian under Jules Joseph Lefebvre and Tony Robert-Fleury. She then continued her studies in Germany, where one of her brothers, Rex, was an officer in the German Army. In Cassel, Edyth became engaged to a Prussian officer, Colonel von W-, at Potsdam, causing a major scandal when she finally broke it off because she couldn't stand the stiff Prussian attitudes; her fiancé would insist on challenging any man whom Edyth so much as smiled at in the street to a duel. Edyth and her mother finally returned to London in 1895. Edyth and Arthur met in Hampstead as artists in the 1890s, and were engaged in 1901. Arthur, a member of the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS), was afraid other members might mock his fantasy pictures in the company of more traditional watercolorists at RWS exhibitions. Edyth persuaded him to put Grimm and Morte D'Arthur into the Winter RWS Exhibition of 1902, which were very well received. She did much to encourage his fantasy drawings at the beginning of his career. She was always his most stimulating, severest critic, and he had the greatest respect for her opinion. They were married on 26 July 1903 at St. Mark's, Hampstead, and honeymooned in North Wales. Their daughter, Barbara, was born in January 1908. Arthur remained inspired by his wife throughout his life. His studio was filled with his Edyth's paintings. In his illustration The Three Bears, he included Edyth's painting The Grebe Hat on the wall of the bears' dining room. And when journalist Eleanor Farjeon was writing an article on Arthur, he asked that she include more about Edyth. Starkie was a member of the International Society; her exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Arts in London included Lilla (1897), St. Cecilia (1898), and Pippa Passes (1899). Her works were purchased for the National Museum, Barcelona, where she had won a gold medal at the Barcelona International Exposition in 1911 for her painting The Black Veil. The Musée du Luxembourg in Paris purchased her painting, The Spotted Dress, in 1913. The Luxembourg collection has since moved to the Musée d'Orsay.

Housed in its original wooded frame, 37 inches by 32 inches and in good condition. Gerald Leslie Brockhurst (1890-1978) was a British painter and etcher. Brockhurst was born in the Edgbaston district of Birmingham on 31 October 1890, son of a coal merchant called Arthur Brockhurst, he soon showed precocious drawing skills and entered the Birmingham School of Art at the age of twelve. A pupil at the Royal Academy Schools in 1907, he won the gold medal and a travelling scholarship in 1913, enabling him to visit both France and Italy. This led to a closer study of such 15th-century artists as Piero della Francesca, Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci, whose work had an abiding influence on him. In 1914 he married for the first time to a Frenchwoman, Anaïs Folin, whom he used as the model for most of his early etchings of young womanhood (especially from 1920 till 1934). From 1915 to 1919 Brockhurst and his wife Anaïs lived in Ireland, where they were friendly with the artist Augustus John and his circle. Though he tried his hand at etching in 1914, it was not until 1920 that he began his career as an etcher in earnest, eventually achieving success as both a printmaker and society portraitist. Brockhurst held his first important exhibition in 1919, in London, and after it was well received returned to live there. In 1921 he was one of the early members of the newly-formed Society of Graphic Art and exhibited with them. Throughout the 1930s he continued an increasingly successful career as a portrait artist, with notable sitters including the film stars Merle Oberon and Marlene Dietrich, as well as the Duchess of Windsor, whose husband commissioned her portrait. In 1937 Brockhurst was elected to the Royal Academy and was able to command a price of 1,000 guineas for a portrait. In the same year however details of his relationship with his young model Kathleen Woodward, whom he had renamed Dorette, were made public after she gave an interview to the Sunday Express. Brockhurst's marriage had previously come under strain in 1922 when his wife discovered his adultery with her sister, Marguerite, and now broke down acrimoniously, with Brockhurst counter-suing on the grounds of his wife's adultery. In August 1939 Brockhurst and Dorette moved to the United States, and he was eventually divorced from his first wife in 1940. He married Kathleen in 1947. In New York City, Brockhurst became both famous and rich with a series of society portraits but his printmaking output diminished, especially his etchings. He produced a few lithographs at the end of his career (around 1945). In 1951, he was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member. In 1958, he appeared as a guest challenger on the TV panel...
