About the Item
Elena Burykina's "Bloom 1" is an original, handmade oil painting that depicts a face with dark hair with blossoming pink flowers that conceal their face and expression.
Artist Statement:
My name is Olena Burykina. I was born in Ulan-Ude, a city in the Russian Far East, in 1977.
In 1985, my family moved west to Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine. It was there that I received my first classical art education. For eleven years of primary and secondary schooling and during 4 years of art school for children, I was taught drawing, painting, sculpture, and art history.
In 1994, I used this education to transition into the field of architecture, where I continued my training in drawing and painting. I completed a Bachelor’s degree in architecture and a Master’s degree in city planning, and I began a career as an architect.
After working for more than a decade as an architect, I returned my full attention to art in 2011. I began teaching children in a private art school in Dnepropetrovsk. This small step eventually led me to leave my architectural consulting in Ukraine and Russia to focus again on painting.
In 2013, I moved to the United States and began working full time as an artist. In 2016, I started work with linoleum block prints, and I have started a collection of flowers and bridges. With this series I won an Emerging Artist Scholarship at the 2017 4 Bridges Art Festival in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 2018, I participated in a group exhibition Women Painting Women at Customs House Museum & Cultural Center in Clarksville, Tennessee. Featuring artists are Linda Brandon, Elena Burykina, Alia El-Bermani, Gaela Erwin, Ann Piper, Tonja Sell, Pamela Wilson. I continue my education as an artist by attending workshops in a private local atelier. My favorite subjects are people with their personalities, moods, thoughts, and favorite things. I work with different mediums such as oil and watercolor paints, etching and linoleum block printing.

Elena Burykina
Elena is an artist based in Chattanooga, TN, USA. Elena always wanted to be an artist. As a child in Ukraine, she received a classical art education which she used for over a decade as an architect. It was an applied form of her desire to create art. Elena moved away from architecture into teaching art to children and painting when she could, and finally, she was able to focus all her time being an artist and learning. She moved to America in 2013 and turned her full attention to painting. She tries to use every opportunity to learn anything new – new tools, mediums, techniques – anything new at all. Elena’s favorite subjects to paint are people with their personalities, moods, thoughts, and favorite things. “I really like to explore the personalities of my models through building the structure of portraiture with oil paint and paintbrush.” Her current focus is portraiture, and she seeks a connection with the model that she can translate to the surface. Elena is a member of The Portrait Society of America. She received an award of Signature Status with the Portrait Society of America in 2022.

- Pacifier IIBy Do Byung-KyuLocated in New York, NYThe medium of choice for Do Byung-Kyu, born in Cheonan, Korea, is dolls: they are both his conceptions and his physical expression. At the same time dolls are also the perfect tool for communicating the artist’s inner self. Expressing himself by means of dolls liberates Do from the restrictions of the mundane world. By embodying in the form of dolls his actions and thoughts, dreams and desires, and even the instincts lying in the depths of the subconscious, he transcends the secular boundaries. Dolls are his alter ego, his other self that he can construct precisely the way he wants. Sublimating the experiences and memories from his youth into various subjects of desire, Do uses dolls to paint a descriptive picture of the ambiguous feelings of contradictions from his childhood when he would abuse and kill a plaything, for example a frog, then bury the body in solemn mourning over its death. These sexual or violent games from his childhood are not likely to be limited to Do’s experiences alone. Most of us can vaguely remember indulging in sadistic acts of sexual love against a doll. Rising above a child’s simple curiosity, it is an intuitive game of the senses we play by ourselves. In a number of Do’s paintings, sticky liquid can be observed dripping down a doll’s face. This brings back recollections of the life inside our mothers’ womb where we were also enveloped by mucous waters, like the amniotic fluid. It refuses contact with the anything, and nothing wants to touch it either. The shape of such a mucous liquid is a protective layer sheltering the intrinsic identity and desires of man. It is also a substitution that satisfies the ego’s instincts otherwise suppressed by social norms. The dolls’ eyes...Category
