About the Item
An elegant and intimate portrait of a young lady in a pale pink hat gazes out beyond the frame. She wears a simple white summer dress and a beaded necklace around her neck. Rich stripes of deep red, marine blue and ochre ground her in the image, with a green heart just above her head. There is a playfulness in Barbara's gaze as she leans forward, almost out of the canvas.

Ewart Johns was a Welsh artist who lived from 1923 to 2013. His works are fresh and exciting explorations of colour and form, with a clear sense of identity coming through. He trained under Ceri Richards, helping to formulate his bold and colourful style. In 1972, Johns became the founding head of the new Department of The Visual Arts at Lancaster University. He lived in Devon until the end of his life.
