Francisco Miralles y Galup
The little bouquet

1878

About the Item

Miralles is one of Spain's most lauded academic coming towards impressionism painters. He was technically superlative and had a way with lush brushwork that made his work highly sought after along with his belle époque figurative subject matter. This small gem is a great example of what was best in his work. Technique wise if you look at the bonnet you see the lovely use of broadly applied creamy white paint that Manet also became noted for. Miralles was known to depict attractive women of the leisure class on outings about town and in the countryside. This is done on a mahogany panel and the frame is an older French style frame with some patina and wear but in an attractive and appropriate way! A museum worthy piece and many of his works are in European museums. Size inside frame of artwork itself is 9.5 x 7.25 inches

  • Woman, Yellow Shawl and Fan
    Located in Greenwich, CT
An impressive and masterful depiction of a young woman with a fan. An American artist who studied and traveled in Europe and painted this painting before his return. It has its original frame which is magnificent. The frame has been regilded in th past 10 years. Vinton was abroad in the 1880s. The sitter gazes coyly over her fan in a gesture that ladies and gentleman of fin-de-siècle Europe would have understood to mean “wait for me,” and perhaps indicating her interest in a potential suitor. Vinton embarked on several trips to Europe—to Spain in 1882 with William Merritt Chase and Robert Blum, and to several different countries in 1888 following his marriage—which provided inspiration for a renewed style and subject matter. While in Spain with Chase and Blum, the three artists visited Madrid and Toledo; there, Vinton studied the masterfully tenebrous portraits of Velázquez, an influence that can be seen in Portrait with Yellow Shawl...

  • Ile de France, Barbizon River Scene
    By Hippolyte Camille Delpy
    Located in Greenwich, CT
This is a rare and very beautiful River scene by Barbican artist Hippolyte Delpy. Rare because it has a very white and bright sky as many Barbican works are heavier in palette. Aligning this painting a bit with the Impressionist influences of the day in France. Truly transporting it is an atmospheric work that is elegant. The panel inside the frame measure 18 x 30 inches. Size listed is with the frame - total size. Delpy achieved extraordinary success both during and after his lifetime. His paintings were very popular due in large part to his unique ability to depict nature both in realistic tones but also with a sentimental feeling gleaned from an understanding of the methods of his mentors, the great landscape painters Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and Charles-Francois Daubigny. In FluBlandschaft in der Ile de France...
