ARTIST: Francois Gianolla (1907-1990) Dutch TITLE: "Portrait Of A Miner" SIGNED: lower right MEDIUM: pencil and charcoal on paper SIZE: 57cm x 47cm inc frame CONDITION: excellent DETAIL: François Gianolla was a Belgian painter, writer, playwright, singer-songwriter, musician, caricaturist, cartoonist, illustrator and comic artist. The majority of his work shows his admiration for the working class, particularly the miners' community in which he grew up. As a comic artist he is best known for his "Clear Line" style and continuing 'Fred et Mile' (1932-1940, later 'Fred, Mile et Bob') in L'Avenir, after Hergé dropped the series. Starting off as a children's gag comic, 'Fred et Mile' evolved into a genuine adventure comic. The series is also historically important for being either the first or second comic album published by Dupuis. Unfortunately Gianolla's style resembled Hergé too much, especially 'Quick et Flupke', which forced him to discontinue his relatively succesful comic strip. He would never make another comic again. François Gianolla was born in 1907 - only two months later than Hergé - in Montignies-sur-Sambre, as the son of a Swiss father and a Walloon mother. He grew up in the miner's quarter in Neuville, Marcinelle and Nalinnes. From an early age he was interested in drawing, music and the life of the common people he saw working everyday. He once wrote: "I was very impressed with these people who seemed to be supernatural to me. Admiring their courage, I swore to illustrate them and show audiences their life in all meaningfulness and honesty. I knew despair, but also the greatness of the worker: he was my horizon." Gianolla studied drawing and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. After graduation he became an illustrator and retoucher in a helio-engraving office. Gianolla then became the staff artist for the "kajotters" movement, the Catholic youth organization. He specialized in illustrations, caricatures and comics. He was also head of a subdivision for young workers.Shortly after World War II, he was an artist/cartoonist for the Katholieke Werkliedenbeweging (the Catholic worker's movement) and a Christian organization. Between 1946 and 1960 he spent most of his time between Paris, Switzerland and Charleroi, creating hundreds of cartoons for different papers and magazines, among them Le Soir Illustré. After settling in Charleroi he became a friend of Félicien Barry, head of the Literary Association of the city, and became an illustrator for its monthly magazine El Bourdon. He also wrote various poems, plays, novels and songs in both French as well as Walloon dialect, all romanticizing the life of miners. His poems were collected in the book 'Sang du Pays Noir'.François Gianolla passed away in 1990 in Nalinnes. From 10 to 13 May 2001, an exhibition of François Gianolla's drawings was organized by the Cenforsoc Mémoire Ouvrière association at the Château de Monceau-sur-Sambre, in the province of Hainaut. Between 21 October 2021 and 30 January 2022 an exhibition about his posters was held in the KADOC, the documentation and research center of the University of Leuven, located in the Vlamingenstraat 39.

  • BEATRICE HUNTINGTON (1889-1988) Scottish impressionist Portrait Oil Painting
    Located in Cirencester, GB
ARTIST: Beatrice Huntington (1889-1988) Scottish TITLE: "Portrait Of A Red Haired Lady" SIGNED: lower left and with provenance from The Scottish Gallery Edinburgh and James Bourlet exhibition label also MEDIUM: oil on canvas SIZE: 68cm x 60cm inc frame CONDITION: very good DETAIL: The Scottish artist Beatrice M. L. Huntington (1889–1988) enjoyed a long and varied career as a painter and is best known for her insightful portraits, characterised by a strong sense of design and an intuitive use of colour. Her approach to painting was ever-evolving: throughout her long and fascinating life, which spanned a century and bore witness to the advent of the modern era, she remained indefatigably committed to her development as an artist and to 'containing and realising the big-ness of it all', as she herself described it in a letter to a friend in 1977, when at the age of 88 she was still refining her approach to form and colour. The daughter of an eminent St Andrews doctor, Beatrice grew up in affluent surroundings – an imposing townhouse on St Andrews South Street both her father's surgery and the family home. A precocious talent for both music and art led her, perhaps unusually for a girl at that time, to pursue her studies abroad. In 1906, the year she turned 17, she went to Paris to study drawing and painting and in 1911, after an evidently successful formative period in Paris, she continued her studies in Munich, attending a private art school where she apparently flourished. By the 1920s, Beatrice's own identity and path as an artist were clearly defined. Her marriage to the painter William Macdonald in 1925 created a unique artistic partnership and cemented her place within the Scottish art scene of the 1920s and 1930s, particularly in Edinburgh where Macdonald was already well established and a close friend of Scottish Colourists F. C. B. Cadell and Samuel Peploe. This is illustrated by surviving correspondence and in particular by a characterful portrait of a debonair William Macdonald by Cadell, dating from the mid-1920s. Macdonald's particular affinity for the arid landscapes of southern Spain had earned him the nickname William 'Spanish' Macdonald. Beatrice shared his love of travel and together they explored the Continent, returning frequently to the French Riviera and to southern Spain, taking as their base, for a time at least, the picturesque Mediterranean fishing village of Cassis in the South of France, a favoured haunt of the Colourists. The couple moved in artistic milieux both at home and abroad, also spending time in Kirkcudbright in Galloway. Their time painting together in Spain culminated with a joint exhibition in 1928 at Messrs Watt and Sons, Dundee, entitled 'Pictures of Spain...

"Ray of Hope" presents a compelling visual narrative that captures the viewer's attention with its elegant simplicity and emotive composition. The central focus is a lady, her eyes fixed on an unseen point, her hands gently supporting her face, and her flowing braided hair cascading down her shoulders. The artist skillfully employs light and shadow to accentuate the contours of her face, creating an ethereal glow that emanates from her serene expression. The painting's colors, a delicate blend of cool and warm tones, add a sense of depth and richness, further enhancing the artwork's emotional impact. The lady's introspective pose and piercing gaze offer a profound glimpse into the human experience. With her hands gently cradling her face, she exudes a sense of vulnerability and introspection, as if lost in her own thoughts and dreams. The flowing braided hair adds an element of timelessness and femininity, while also symbolizing the fluidity and interconnectedness of one's hopes and aspirations. "Ray of Hope" serves as a reminder that within the depths of contemplation, a spark of optimism and resilience can emerge, guiding individuals toward a brighter future. Alogi's unique ability to blend symbolism with evocative imagery gives birth to visual masterpieces that resonate with viewers on both intellectual and emotional levels. Alogi's artistic style is characterized by a delicate balance between realism and poetic abstraction. His meticulous attention to detail, particularly in capturing facial expressions and the intricacies of hair, results in a stunning portrayal of human emotion. • Cubist Portrait of Gabriele Varese (in Italian uniform), 1919
    Located in Stockholm, SE
Dick Beer (b. London 1893 - d. Stockholm 1938) Portrait of Gabriele Varese (in Italian uniform), 1919 oil on canvas mounted on panel 116 x 90 cm stamp signature Exhibited: Solo exhibition, Stockholm, Nov-Dec 1917; The Royal Academy Stockholm 1973; Åmells Konsthandel – En internationell kubist, Stockholm & London 2008 Hälsinglands Museum 2011 Millesgården – Dick Beer – Impressionist & Kubist, 2012 Provenance: Within the family Beer until today Dick Beer was born in 1893 in London as Richard Beer, the youngest of five brothers. His father, John Beer (1853-1906), was a watercolourist who was born in Stockholm and had left Sweden at the age of 17. John Beer instructed his sons in drawing and painting, among other things. A number of sketchbooks bear testimony to the boys’ talent. Dick Beer’s parents died in 1906 and 1907. Barely 15 years old, Beer arrived in Sweden as an orphan. First he lived with relatives and finally he ended up at Reverend Laurell in Västergötland. Dick Beer began his artistic studies at the Althin School of Painting in Stockholm in 1908 and continued at the Royal Academy of Arts in the autumn of 1910, but in September 1912 he broke off his studies and travelled to Paris. He rented a studio and enrolled at the Colarossi and Grande Chaumière academies. In the summer of 1913, Dick Beer travelled to Pont-Aven in Bretagne in order to paint. In September the same year, he held his first solo exhibition in Stockholm which he gave the French title Exposition des tableaux de Bretagne et autour de Paris. The exhibition proved a success. Many of the paintings were executed in a light palette in a style inspired by the impressionists. In 1914, Dick Beer undertook an extensive study trip to Italy, Tunis, Morocco and Spain, which resulted in canvases overflowing with colours and light. When the French army mobilised, he volunteered and was enlisted in the French Foreign Legion. In 1915 Dick Beer sustained severe head injuries in a grenade attack, which resulted in deafness and a nervous condition that would plague him for the rest of his life. Two of his brothers died the following year, fighting for the English army. Dick Beer was hospitalised and convalesced at Château de Rochefort. Here he started painting again, in an impressionist style, a painting dominated by blue and green hues. In 1918, Dick Beer married Ruth Öhrling, a dentist, and their son John was born later in the year. During this time, Beer began experimenting with cubist painting and created several large compositions, including the painting “The Arab Café”. In the years that followed, Dick Beer was based in Paris, where he often moved house. He was instructed by André Lhote, who encouraged his students to work freely in the studio and provided them with individual critique. Beer often travelled to Bretagne or Provence. His artist friends came from all over Europe and included Amedeo Modigliani. Dick Beer exhibited fairly regularly in Paris between 1919 and 1934 and made a name for himself in French artist circles. In the summers, Ruth regularly rented a house in the countryside, often at Lake Mälaren. She kept a large house with many models and friends and there was a lot of painting and discussions. In 1933, the couple divorced but Ruth still loved Dick and continued to support him financially for the rest of his life. Dick Beer also exhibited in Sweden, albeit irregularly due to his failing health. In the 1920s and 1930s, Beer continued to pursue an expressionist painting with intense colours and unexpected perspectives, but eventually he veered towards more naturalistic forms, including a large number of nudes. He also painted several portraits of artists, politicians and writers. In 1938, Dick Beer sojourned in Arles. The budding photographer Christer Strömholm...
