About the Item
'Elegant Woman in an Interior', oil on panel (circa 1960s), by Gaetano Bocchetti. This painting captures its subject, an elegantly presented woman in her night clothes and indoor slippers glancing towards the viewer with a sense of serene contentedness. Like many of the artist's subjects, she is the strong, independent type of person, happily single and comfortable on her own. The work is newly framed with a French-style linen slip. About the Artist: Gaetano Bocchetti (1888-1990) from Naples, Italy, dropped out of medical school after being accepted to the Neapolitan School of Fine Arts. Bocchetti left a tremendous body of work: lush Italian landscapes, still-lifes and intimate portraits of people on their own, mostly women. Bocchetti's frescoes grace the walls of churches and his paintings hang in museums and in private international collections that periodically come to auction at the major houses. Bocchetti died in 1990 having lived until he was 102.

Gaetano Bocchetti
Gaetano Bocchetti graduated against the wishes of his family at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. His beginnings approach stylistically to the artists of the Neapolitan Secession of the 23, in particular he was close to the style of Francesco Galante and Gennaro Villani. His painting is extremely versatile and ranges between the various pictorial moments with ease. In addition to painting, he also dedicated himself to the decoration and creation of numerous frescoes inspired by 18th century art in southern Italy.
