George de Forest Brush
Portrait of Native American Man in Traditional Clothing

c. 1890

About the Item

Brush was a pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme in Paris and became a member of the National Academy of Design, New York, and of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. From 1883 onward he attracted much attention by his paintings of North American Indians (Britannica 2023). For Brush, the figure of the Indian became a metaphor through which he could address his concern that a nation racing toward modernism was losing its regard for art born of craft and tradition. The artist’s technically exquisite and contextually rich Indian paintings have been brought together for many exhibitions! (NGA 2023). This painting is a great example of Brush's mastery of portraiture. This comes with frame and is a great painting from around the 1890s.

When he was 17, he worked in New York City as an illustrator and years later traveled to Paris to study with Jean-Léon Gérôme and Carolus-Duran. During his years in France he summered with the Barbizon artists where he was especially influenced by the work of François Millet. In the United States, he became active as a muralist, illustrator, and decorative painter, performing prominent commissions such as the ceiling murals and decorations of New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel. His Beaux Arts classicism inspired Louis Comfort Tiffany and other of his younger colleagues. After 1900, as artistic styles changed, there was less demand for his work but he continued to write art criticism for Scribner's and The Century magazine...

These connections are rich and very important. They Exist! My work, I hope, will serve as a creative connection between the African diaspora and western culture.
