Guido Reni Follower – The Death of Cleopatra – 17th Century Italian School

ca. 1650's

About the Item

Italian School By a follower of Guido Reni (1575-1642) The Death of Cleopatra • 17th Century • Oil on octagonal hewn oak panel, ca. 25 x 19 cm • Octagonal frame, constructed out of a 19th Century gilt frame, ca. 32.5 x 27 cm Worldwide shipping is complimentary - There are no charges for handling & delivery Cleopatra, the last empress of Ptolemaic Egypt, died on an August day, in the year 30 BC, in Alexandria aged 39. According to popular belief, Cleopatra killed herself by allowing an asp (Egyptian cobra) to bite her in the bosom - As depicted in the scene on this antique painting. The painting is fairly clean, with nice rosy skin tones. Seems to have been cleaned maybe 50 years ago – however since that time new dirt, aka fly droppings have re-accumulated. Also, I can spot small areas of retouching – difficult to say. The painting presents very well, and the paint layer is complete and stable – A pretty little object, which has been around for 500 years. Before the portrait was framed, one of the previous owners decided to nail the panel to the wall – this resulted in a hole at the top and a short hairline crack traveling down towards the center The crack is stable since 2016, which is when I bought the little painting and also fitted the clamps, which hold the panel in place in the frame. The painting is on a hand-hewn oak panel which can be comfortably dated to the 17th century. On the back there is the scurrile inscription : ‘Scuola del Banti or Bansi’ . Unfortunately, I have not been able to find any information, regarding this ‘School of B…’. There is also a number ‘26’ or ‘M6’ inscribed by the same hand nearby. The portraits style and the subject matter is very close to the work of Guido Reni (1575-1642) – Numerous unknown, but nevertheless talented Italian artists would commercially re-paint variations of paintings created by the successful artists of their time. This painting is well executed, and I particularly like the tears emerging in the beautiful eyes of the doomed queen. What drama. It is worth pointing out, that I never found a painting on which this bejeweled Cleopatra is exactly based on … so painted by an accomplished 17thC artistwith own ideas indeed, who certainly followed Reni in style; or even was in the circle of Reni. By Hedwig Mechle-Grossmann

Hedwig Mechle - Grossmann (Germann, * 3rd of December 1857, Görlitz - † 1st of October, 1928 Ödenburg) Die Kleine Rosenverkäuferin - The Little Rose Seller • Oil on carse canvas, ca. 100 x 75 cm • Frame, 107 x 81 cm • Signed and dated 1920 upper right This large painting will make everybody stop, look, smile and want to buy a lovely rose from that charming girl. Take your time and have a look at the details … the stopper of the water ceramic bottle, her piece of bread, the torn and frayed clothing and more. Worldwide shipping is complimentary - There are no additional charges for handling & delivery. Hedwig Mechle-Grossmann is well known and appreciated for her expressive genre scenes depicting children. Born in Görlitz, she worked in Berlin and moved on to Ödenburg, where she died. Important examples of her work are held in the Ödenburg Landesmuseum. A few words on condition: The painting has received slight sympathetic restoration - The partially frayed edges have been professionally relined with a narrow strip of new canvas for strength and then the canvas has been re-stretched on to the original stretcher, with the arms of the stretcher covering most of the newly attached strips of canvas. One of the arms of the stretcher has suffered slight worm damage in the past. That short section has been treated, stabilized and the restorer covered the unsightly area with a strip of the same canvas, which was used to reline the edges. The frame seems to be original (certainly early 20thC) - the corners have been re-glued, small areas have been retouched and minor sections of the molding are missing. New small woodblocks...

  • Garçon avec des Fruit - Boy with Fruit - Oil on Canvas - Naive Painting
    By Nino Giuffrida
    Located in Meinisberg, CH
Nino Giuffrida (Sicilian, 1924, active in France) Un Garçon avec des Fruits • Oil on canvas, ca. 41 x 33 cm • Frame, made by the renowned framer Knöll from Zürich, ca. 54 x 46 cm • Signed top left Worldwide shipping is complimentary - There are no additional charges for handling & delivery. Born in 1924 in Sicily, Nino already attended the artistic high school in Catania at the age of 17, where he befriended fellow painters including Pippo Aleo and Giovanni Calogero. At that time, he painted with passion everything he saw, landscapes, seascapes, still lifes. After a first attempt to come to France with his friend Giovanni in 1948, aborted for lack of a visa. Nino finally arrived at the Gare de Lyon on December 8, 1949 and settled at number 30 rue Gabrielle in Montmartre. Nino began to paint Paris. Like many Montmartre artists of this period, while he painted all day long, he moved about in the evening on the terraces of the cafés of Montmartre and Saint-Germain-des-Prés to transform himself into a portrait painter and randomly sketch the customers in restaurants. Nino then devoted himself more and more to the painting of children, which became his favorite theme of inspiration. Pierre Imbourg, journalist and art critic, wrote of him: "Montmartre, the land of little ‘Poulbots’, inspiring Nino to record in his mind all these childrens faces whose intense facial expression he would endevour to reproduce". It was also at this time that his career as a Montmartre painter influenced by cubism began. With the disappearance of the art galleries in Montmartre, Nino decides to settle on the French Riviera, in Cannes then in Vallauris. From 1952 his personal exhibitions follow one another and Nino becomes an international painter: Rome, Brussels, Chicago, Copenhagen, Helsingborg and Aüs in Sweden, in Geneva, in Kourou in Guyana... In Paris, he manages the Galerie de la Colonne...

  • Dark Toned Impressionist Style Portrait of an Elderly Texas Couple
    By Wayman Adams
    Located in Houston, TX
Lovely portrait of an elderly Austin couple sitting in a dark toned interior. This work is done in the same loose brushwork style that Wayman Adams is famous for in his portraiture. This painting came out of the artist's Austin estate when he passed away. The piece is signed in the lower left corner and comes in the gold frame. Dimensions Without Frame: H 52.25 in. x W 40 in. Artist Biography: Wayman Adams was born in rural Indiana in 1883. His interest in art was cultivated at an early age by his father who was a horse farmer and an amateur artist. At the age of twenty-one Adams moved to Indianapolis to attend the John Herron Art Institute. It was here that Adams began to paint portraits, the subject matter for which he became best known. Having made a name for himself as a portraitist, Adams moved to New York City. While there he took two trips to Europe, the first in 1910 when he traveled to Italy with William Merritt Chase. Two years later he accompanied Robert Henri to Spain where he met fellow artist Margaret Borroughs, whom he married six years later. The couple had one child, a son named Wayman Jr. who was called "Snig." Approaching the canvas, Adams favored the alla prima style of painting that he learned from Chase and Henri. He would paint an entire portrait in one sitting, often only for three to four hours long, rather than over the span of several drafts and sittings. This loose and expressive style of painting gave his images an emotional immediacy, and made the portrait-painting experience more pleasant for the sitter. He became well known as a "lightning" artist and painted many prominent figures such as Presidents Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover, tire tycoon B.F. Goodrich, and golfer Bobby Jones. As a portrait artist, Adams traveled throughout the country to fulfill commissions. This was not unusual for portraitists as they relied on wealthy patrons who could afford to commission paintings of themselves and their families. During the winter months, Adams spent a good deal of time in the South, especially in New Orleans. In addition to being a prolific portrait artist, Adams was also a teacher. In 1932 he and Margaret opened and taught at the Old Mill Art Colony in the Adirondack Mountains, and from 1935-36 he taught art in Taxco, Mexico. Adams also acted as a mentor to young Maltby Sykes...
