Hans Canon
Mein Bruder Georg (Portrait of George Anselm Alphonse von Rothschild)

c. 1882-1883

About the Item

We are pleased to offer this portrait of George Anselm Alphonse von Rotschild, scion of the Austrian branch of the famed Rotschild family. This painting was owned by his sister Valentine Noemi Rotschild von Springer and descended in the family to a New York relative on Long Island. George Anselm Alphonse von Rotschild was born in 1877 and this portrait was painted c. 1882-1883 by Hans Canon, a noted Austrian genre and portrait painter, who completed many paintings for the Austrian royal family. His work is in the collection of the Belvedere Museum in Vienna. The painting is housed in the original frame. This is a chance to own a charming portrait and a piece of history--in this case, with provenance back to its original creation.

Brought up as a "normal" American girl, Kurz always wanted to be an artist. She studied at Brandeis, at Hunter with Robert Motherwell and received her MFA from Columbia. She received instruction from Hans Hoffmann, studied with Phillip Guston...
