19th Century portrait of Honorable Major Alexander Murray by renowned English portrait painter James Lonsdale (British 1777-1839) Oil on canvas Measures 35 1/4″ x 27 1/4″ Displayed in Beautiful Ornate Gold Frame. James Lonsdale (16 May 1777 Lancaster – 17 January 1839 London) was a fashionable and prolific English portrait painter who exhibited some 138 works at the Royal Academy between 1802 and 1838, and was one of the founders of the Society of British Artists. His work was influenced by his Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769–1830). Lonsdale was a pupil of George Romney (1734–1802). Lonsdale, who started off as a pattern designer at Margerison and Glover’s print-works in Catterall, was encouraged as an artist by the Lancaster architect Richard Threlfall, of whom he exhibited a portrait in 1809. Lord Archibald, impressed by the quality of his painting and drawing, invited him to Ashton Hall. Here he met two of Lord Archibald’s daughters, Lady Anne Hamilton and Lady Susan, the Countess of Dunmore. Feeling that his future would hold more promise in the city, he moved to London, becoming a favorite pupil of Romney’s, accompanying him abroad on several occasions. He enrolled in the Royal Academy Schools on 23 October 1801. Lonsdale married a Lancastrian, Miss Thornton, and set up a residence in Southgate. The marriage produced three sons who became portrait painter, the second was James John Lonsdale, recorder of Folkestone, and the last a surgeon. Highly respected, his growing list of clients enabled him to purchase John Opie’s studio at 8 Berners Street in the City of Westminster, where he remained until his death. After settling into his new studio he made the acquaintance of the Duke of Norfolk, who commissioned him to do a large historical painting of King John and the Magna Carta, which later was rendered in stained glass in Arundel Castle. Besides the Duke of Norfolk, his sitters included the Duke of Sussex, the Grand Duke Nicholas, the Archibald Douglas-Hamilton, 9th Duke of Hamilton and the Marquess of Downshire. In 1820 the Lord Mayor of London commissioned him to do a portrait of Queen Caroline, after which he was appointed her official portrait painter. Through the Duke of Norfolk he was introduced to the Beefsteak Club, where he met with the most distinguished persons of the time.[2][3] His portraits reflected accurate details of his sitters that may have been regarded as unflattering. Lonsdale’s portraits are owned and displayed at many large galleries and museums. Based on our accessible databases, the last public auction of a Lonsdale portrait was December 12, 2014 at Du Mouchelles, Detroit, MI 12 Dec 2014 for $7,000. Alexander Murray (ca. 1715 – 1762) was a British army officer who served in Father Le Loutre’s War and the French and Indian War in Nova Scotia. He was the brother of James Murray. Murray was in the 17th Foot on 17 July 1739 and was promoted lieutenant in the 6th Foot on 19 January 1740. He joined the 45th Foot on 19 April 1742 as a captain and was with the regiment when it arrived in Gibraltar on 17 June to take up garrison duties. Murray went to Louisbourg, Cape Breton Island (Île Royale), with the regiment in April 1746. When it was moved to Halifax in July 1749 he was in England, but he had rejoined it in Nova Scotia by December during Father Le Loutre’s War. He remained with it in the colony for almost ten years, during which time he built a house at Halifax. At first he commanded at Fort Sackville and then in September 1751 he was given command of Fort Edward, where he remained for most of the ensuing seven years, except for a tour of duty at Halifax in 1753. In the spring of 1755 he impounded the boats belonging to the Acadians of the Minas Basin, whom he suspected of violating Charles Lawrence’s embargo on the export of wheat. On orders from Lawrence, in June he confiscated their guns in case they might hinder Robert Monckton’s planned seizure of Fort Beauséjour. During the French and Indian War, following the decision of Lawrence and his council to expel the Acadians from Nova Scotia, Murray supervised the deportations from the immediate area of Fort Edward. During October 1755 he sent off 1,100 persons in four ships. Murray was promoted major in the 45th on 1 October 1755. Along with his brother James under Wolfe, the regiment took part in Jeffery Amherst’s expedition against Louisbourg in June 1758. The following year he took part in Wolfe’s campaign against Quebec. Then, on 19 November 1761 he took part in the campaign against Martinique. He suffered from an attack of yellow fever shortly after his arrival on the island, but he had apparently recovered completely when he died suddenly on 19 March 1762. Alexander’s brother, James Murray (21 January 1721, Ballencrieff, East Lothian, Scotland – 18 June 1794, Battle, East Sussex) FRS was a British soldier, whose lengthy career included service as colonial administrator and governor of the Province of Quebec and later as Governor of Minorca from 1778 to 1782. His term in Quebec was notably successful, and marked with excellent relationships with the conquered French-Canadians. who were reassured of their traditional rights and customs.
