About the Item

Frame size 86x114 cm. Josep Maria Mallol i Suazo (Barcelona, 1910 - Barcelona, 1986) is a well-known painter whom critics pointed out as one of the main names in non-avant-garde post-war painting. It must be taken into account that the criticism of the eighties gave little relevance to everything that was not avant-garde. However, although Mallol's work had little public resonance since the late 1960s, the Barcelona newspapers gave great notoriety to the artist's death in 1986, explains his biographer Francesc Miralles Bofarull, who in his book on the master Mallol Suazo claims that the history of contemporary art has rejected, in the name of the avant-garde, part of artistic creation. It is not that the academic, realist or bourgeois tendencies have been underestimated, but rather that they have been erased from history, says Miralles. Before dedicating himself definitively to painting and at the beginning of his career, he signed humorous drawings under the pseudonym Lollam. He trained at the Lonja School with Fèlix Mestres as a drawing teacher and Ramon Calsina as a painting teacher. He collaborated making humorous drawings in Virolet, L'Esquitx or En Patufet where his brother Lluís also drew. He exhibited in the Sala Parés and in other rooms in Barcelona, in Spain as well as in different European and American cities. He lived abroad for a few seasons, specifically in Italy and Brazil. He was awarded several prizes and medals: the first, at the 1936 Spring Exhibition; the Nonell Prize in 1939; the Barcelona Fine Arts exhibitions of 1942 (where he obtained a third-class diploma with the work La Lectura) and 1944; the Montserrat competition in 1947 and in the Hispanic American Biennial of Madrid in 1951, the year in which he stopped participating in official competitions and exhibitions. The landscape and female figure paintings stand out for their technical mastery and their initial ease.
