About the Item

This superb British Victorian portrait oil painting is by much noted and exhibited female artist Maud Porter. Painted circa 1890 it is a seated portrait of a young woman and her terrier dog. They are both sat on a bench and the young lady has a letter in her hand. Her little dog is looking at her with some concern which Porter has perfectly captured. The details in her face and lace dress are just lovely as is the brushwork. The soft pink of her parasol is mirrored in her hat and cheeks. A super British portrait oil painting by a noted female Victorian artist of her day who exhibited many times at The Royal Academy from 1888 to 1905. Signed upper left. Provenance. Haynes Fine Art of Broadway. Condition. Oil on canvas, 36 inches by 28 inches unframed, in good condition. Frame. Housed in a gilt frame 44 inches by 36 inches framed and in good condition. Maud Porter (Exh. 1888-1905). Portwr was a British Victorian female artist and portrait painter in oils and watercolours. She exhibited at The Royal Academy, The Royal Society of Portrait Painters, The Royal Oil Painters Institute, The Walker Art Gallery, The Royal Institute of Painters, The New Gallery, The Manchester City Art Gallery and The Society of Women Artists. One of her portraits hangs in the British National Collection, a portrait of Admiral Seymour. Exhibited: Walker Gallery, Liverpool 6, Manchester City Gallery 1, New Gallery 1, Royal Society of Portrait Painters 14, Royal Academy 19, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours 5, Royal Institute of Oil Painters 3, Society of Women Artists 2.
