Tuscan Florentine Figurative Painting oil canvas Signed Gordigiani 19th century

1878

About the Item

Michele Gordigiani was a florentine artist, he started as sculptor under L. Bartolini but then he preferred painting studies, following at first the school founded by L. Mussini and then the G. Bezzuoli’s lessons at the Accademia in Florence. He used to actively participate at the reunions of the Macchiaioli’s group at the Caffè Michelangelo, sharing the same artistic researches. On the 1860 he moved to Paris where, thanks to his friend Virginia Oldoini Countess of Castiglione, he joined in the high class life of the town. The portrait of the king of Italy Vittorio Emanuele II, commissioned by his cousin Eugenio Emanuele di Savoia, was fundamental for the development of Gordigiani’s career because, thanks to the many excellent reviews, he obtained the role of the official painter of the royal house. He had a great success on his life and he travelled a lot, in Europe and in America, invited by the most important courts for his ability in the art of the portrait. On the 1909 he died in his home town. Our portrait is part of the mature portrait painting of Gordigiani, influenced by the Macchiaioli’s experience and by the Parisian avant-guarde, typify by a veil of pleasantness that doesn’t hide the complexity and malice of the human soul. Vibrant brush strokes and light colors are chosen to convey a sense of delicacy and dream. (with frame, cm 77 x 92)

  • Rococo painting with frame by 18th-century Venetian school oil on canvas

The painting (with a Salvador Rosa-style gilded frame 88 x 116 cm) depicts a group of four children who are playing outside on a swinging seesaw; we are probably dealing with a prank, as can be seen by the satisfied expression of the child on the right at the expense of the one in the foreground, who seems to be supported by the others, perhaps because of the fear felt. They are dressed in the same way, with black or brown ankle boots and a kind of double-breasted jumpsuit with a rich lace collar reminiscent of the jabots of dames, blue for the one in the foreground, brick-colored for the other three. Children also look alike in the hair, typical of the period, and features, suggesting a kinship relationship. We find the same subject, for example, in Johann Zoffany...

  • Florentine Signed Gordigiani Portrait Landscape Painting 19th century oil canvas
    By Michele Gordigiani
    Located in Florence, IT
The scene is set in a luxuriant and blossoming garden-on which we can see a pergola vine training and an ionic column-outlined with fast and wide brush strokes of faint and pastel colours. In some parts of the background is revealed the preparatory layer, because it’s unfinished, but we can presume the presence of a light blue sky with some clouds, deducing it from a confrontation with the left side, where the sky was started. In the foreground a boy dressed up with a style reminding medieval echoes looks like observing a flower or a small animal that he’s holding, as the position of the fingers-that seems caressing something-make suppose. It's signed on the right side: MG. (Michele Gordigiani). The physiognomy, the expression and the hairstyle recall Edoardo Gordigiani...
