"Sideways Glance, " Portrait Oil on Wood signed on Back by Robert Richter

2010

About the Item

"Sideways Glance" is an original oil painting on wood by Robert Richter. The artist signed the piece on the back. This artwork features a woman with long red hair glancing behind her over her shoulder. The artist hand-carved the frame to become an integral part of the artwork. 8" x 9" art 15 5/8" x 15 1/2" frame Artist's Statement: "I was born in Milwaukee over half-a-century ago in the year of the horse. I started painting in earnest when I was eight years old. My parents saw that it might be nice for me to take some art lessons. I spent Saturdays in those days drawing Superman and Batman (Batwoman too, Ha!) from comic books. My formative brain was stamped with the creedo that one cannot make a decent painting without making a decent drawing. To this day it is a self-imposed limitation (?) that opens my world. Later I would graduate from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and then off to New York City with a Fine Art degree. I painted store front windows, speak easy murals for gangsters, lithographs from aluminum plates for actors, wood paintings for funk musicians, stage sets for theatre, T-shirts, costumes, curtains, wall hangings, furniture, floors- I painted everything, literally. Years later in a distant city, I received a Masters degree in Contemplative Buddhist Studies. I draw and paint from memory. When I am satisfied with a drawing, I incise it on wood panel. I color it in not too unlike a coloring book, staying pretty much within the lines. It keeps me from getting too carried away. It is a forgiving technique. I do not use photographs. I try to paint the snapshot in my head and heart. Another little thing I like to do is incorporate the sensations of many colors in a single application. A black top road for instance is noted for its peach, lavender, smoky gray yellow and dry blue- to create the sensation of all these colors in a single application. Now that would be some crayola crayon! Another painter once remarked to me, "Why bother". And here is why. I want my paintings to be stunning from across the room, to beckon, as all good paintings should. And then up close, what a surprise! So simply done! Even a cave man can do it! I am pleased and honored to be currently represented by David Barnett. 2009"

  • 'My Father' Original Oil Painting Signed by Francesco Spicuzza
    By Francesco Spicuzza
    Located in Milwaukee, WI
Signed lower right by the artist. Francesco J. Spicuzza, born in Sicily on July 23, 1883, came to America at the age of 8. He supported himself as a fruit peddler until a newspaperman gave him $4 a week to go to school. He attended classes at the Milwaukee Art Students League, where he studied under Alexander Mueller. There he learned to paint in the then-fashionable "Munich School" technique, with detailed realism in heavy browns and grayed-out hues. Spicuzza completed eight grades in four years, and then in 1911, three businessmen advanced him enough money to allow him to study in New York under artist and teacher John Carlson. It was during this time that Spicuzza changed his style of painting, developing an impressionistic use of color, form and atmospheric renditions. After a period of grinding poverty, one of Spicuzza's pictures won a major New York competition. It was the first of 60 wins, both in the U.S. and Paris. He became a fashionable painter, and many of the leading collections have his work. Spicuzza's typical works were beach scenes, still life, landscapes and portraits done in pastels, oils, ink, charcoal and watercolors. Much of his work traced the history of Milwaukee in the early 1900s. He was probably best known for his scenes of women and children splashing in the waves...

The artwork depicts a snapshot of modern urban life, where people on the streets are glued to their phones. Whether chatting, checking notifications, or scrolling through feeds, the scene shows how busy a city can be in the digital age. Using a harmonious palette mostly with warm orange tones, the painting exudes a vibrant and inviting atmosphere. Loose brushstrokes infuse the composition with liveliness.
