About the Item

Sachi Rome is inspired by the works of Gerhard Richter, Deborah Dancy, Ed Clark, M. Florine Démosthène, Morel Doucet and Kassou Seydou.
Sachi Rome is a painter and a mixed media artist who views her process as a ritual. Utilizing expressive mark making, movement and texture through an experimental use of tools and materials, she creates a visual dialogue that explores spaces for Black people to exist without fear. Connections between identity, memory and African spirituality are entry points for creating a protected and safe space, free from the contrived world that fights to sustain the deception that Black bodies are a threat, and thus unworthy of peaceful existence. Her subjects are colorful, textured figures living in a visual space left open and void of outside negative forces. In creating visual avatars of these souls, she is regifting them with life, presence and audience. They are at home in their space and assured of a rarefied and precious safety, scarcely afforded to and felt by Black people. It is within her work that she offers portals and talismans of hope, healing and protection.
Sachi Rome was born, raised, lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia. She graduated with a Bachelor of Education from Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia, with a concentration in painting, under the tutelage of renowned painter Louise Delsarte. Sachi went on to attain a Master of Arts from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She is the recipient of multiple awards and residencies and her work has been acquired by both public institutions and private collectors throughout the United States. She has spent her artistic career in the dual roles of artist and educator.

Sachi Rome lives and works in Atlanta, the city where she was born and raised. She graduated with a Bachelor of Education from Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia with a concentration in painting, under the tutelage of renowned painter Louise Delsarte. Rome went on to attain a Master of Arts from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Rome is a multidisciplinary artist and muralist, flowing seamlessly from painting, printmaking and large scale murals. Foundational to her practice is the use of rich vibrant color and texture, leaning into abstract figurative works that push beyond both the literal and figurative representation of black bodies. Her work is reflective of critical questions surrounding identity, representation, and the creation of a metaphysical space for black bodies to safely exist in. She has been featured in Forbes, The NY Times and the Huffington Post. Her awards and recognition include The Creatives Project Residency (2020-2022), Garden Fellows Fellowship (2018), Stay-home Residency (2021), Fulton County Arts and Culture Grant Awardee (2020). Her work has been acquired by both public institutions and private collectors throughout the United States. Her exhibition record includes the Apex Museum (GA), Nowhere Art Gallery-Martha’s Vineyard (MA), University of Southern Mississippi (MS), Bo Barrett Art Center (NY), Swan Coach House (GA), Mason Fine Art (GA), Lyndon House Art Center (GA), amongst others. Her murals and public art can be seen throughout the city of Atlanta. She has spent her artistic career in the dual roles of artist and educator.
