2018

About the Item

Colorful abstract self-portrait by Houston, TX artist Saralene Tapley. This portrait features the artist as the subject in a pink wig. With the main medium as a silkscreen pigment on canvas, this work features various details and textures that make this painting one of a kind. Signed at the back. Unframed but framing options are available. Artist Biography: Saralene Tapley is an Irish-American artist. Tapley had just recently moved back to Hous-ton, TX upon the completion of her MFA from the New York Academy of Art. She had previously lived in London and in Dublin for her BFA studies at Dublin’s National College of Art and Design. She had also completed her Masters's Degree in Humanities at the University of Houston - Clear Lake. Saralene’s childhood, as she would describe it, was “very colorful.” She lived in the United States until she was eleven, and then moved to Taiwan and Korea where she fin-ished secondary school. She had made quite a few friends, who she still faithfully keeps in touch with, from all over the world. Coming from a tight-knit family with four siblings, her brothers have been her best patrons. Her only sister, Ciarah, can be seen as a subject in Saralene’s triptych included in Encounters: A Retrospective, an exhibition currently on view at Reeves Art + Design in Houston, TX. Her family plays a vital role in her art-making. At one point, her works hung in a Montreal wine bar owned by her older brother, Matthew. Ciarah and her younger brother serve as both her collectors and critiques. She attributes most of her interest in art to her parents who have been very encouraging of her art career despite its many known challenges. Most of my training as a child came from her mother who hails from Wisconsin and is a very talented artist and teacher. She spent most of my childhood watching her draw portraits of local families and taking art classes. Her father, on the other hand, is a skilled carpenter and engineer from Dublin, Ire-land, and has hung her paintings and has done framing for her numerous paintings. Tapley’s works can be seen in various places such as various hotels and restaurants in her hometown of Dublin, Ireland. Saralene Tapley takes pleasure in the arts in a way that enables her to reinvent her craft over time. She takes interest in learning various mediums that further her artwork and her excellent talent in capturing what is essential in all of her subjects.

  • "DUAL Pop Icon No. 1", Monumental Contemporary Spray Painted Portrait
    By Paul Barces
    Located in Houston, TX
Bold, graphic spray paint portrait piece by local Houston street artist DUAL titled "Pop Icon No. 1 ". Signed, titled, and dated on the back. This piece was featured at a solo exhibition of DUAL's work titled "Waste Nothing" at the Wedge Space in Houston, TX in 2016. Artist Biography: DUAL stands for the conflict between “street art” and “fine” art, between freeway burners and gallery exhibitions, between mass recognition and total anonymity. His bold lines and fresh colors are a break from the every day monotony of life in the city—a taste of urban subculture, whether you asked for it or not. While one may not have a choice in where and when they encounter a DUAL piece, DUAL leaves it up to the observer to assign a meaning to his work. By operating under a pseudonym, he lets his audience write their own narrative for who he is and the message he is trying to get across. Perhaps best known for his work with wheat paste, particularly since his feature in the 2011 wheat pasting documentary Stick ‘Em Up!, DUAL has never been one to confine himself to a particular medium, background, or context. He has been recognized not only for his work with silkscreen and spray paint, but also for his work with lithography and acrylics. Though his obsession with “making marks” stems from his background in graffiti, he has translated that into a passion for creating art. His “art” includes everything from large-scale murals to micro...

  • Mixed Media Large Pop Art Painting Drawing Brian Kenny NYC Street Art 2015
    Located in Surfside, FL
Brian Kenny, (German-American, 1982-) MIxed Media Painting with Drawing, Oil or Acrylic on Canvas. Hand signed On Verso and Dated 2015, NYC Dimensions: Sight- 30" x 24", Frame- 36" x 30" Brian Kenny (born 1982, Heidelberg, Germany) is a NYC-based American multidisciplinary artist exhibited in galleries, museums, theaters and alternative venues in the US, Canada, Russia, Israel and across Europe. In 2004 Brian began an ongoing collaboration with artist Slava Mogutin as SUPERM, and in 2016 with writer Rich Juzwiak as BOYFRIEND HOUSE. Using an array of mediums including drawing, painting, sculpture, textile, video and performance, Brian’s artwork is bright and vividly expressionistic; often autobiographical and reflective of his current states of mind which include themes of his queer identity, shifting societal perceptions about gender, sexuality and politics, urban living and free-associative wanderings of thought and creative experimentation. New York-based artist Brian Kenny’s work is a visually striking exploration of gender, sexuality, and politics in contemporary North America. Known for his experimental and expressionistic practice, Brian mixes mediums such as painting, illustration, collage, sculpture, and textiles – oftentimes all at once. Brian’s foundation in drawing is evident across his portfolio, with nearly every piece incorporating some signature scribblings from the artist. He has experimented with drawing, collage, photography, performance and, more recently, painting. “All the other mediums I’m exploring like, painting, textile art, and animation all branch out from drawing,” he explains. This focus is what makes Brian’s vast collection of work all feel so cohesive. "Both of my parents were in the US military and we moved around a lot in the US. But most of the places I lived were rural, far from big cities and art museums, so I had no idea who Andy Warhol, Mark Rothko, Chuck Close, David Hockney or Damien Hirst were. The few small art museums I visited as a child were full of old-school oil paintings; all life-like portraits, rural landscapes and historical recreations. It wasn’t until I met Slava Mogutin and moved to New York that I began to meet artists, see exhibitions at art galleries of living artists near my age, and tour lot of contemporary art museums like MoMA and begin learning about contemporary art history". Brian says. “I’m definitely not a minimalist and lean toward more narrative and figurative artwork than abstraction or decoration”. Minimalist, he is not: Brian’s work pops with vibrant colours, characters and shapes, evoking a Warholian play on pop art culture. Kenny’s signature line drawing style is reminiscent of Keith Haring and LA Ortiz and evokes comparisons to early Jean Michel Basquiat. Brian's commercial and fashion work includes art and design commissions and collaborations with Onitsuka Tiger (Japan...

  • Mixed Media Oil Painting and Spray Paint Abstract Painting Selbstportrait
    By Kadar Brock
    Located in Surfside, FL
"Selbstportrait Und Der Sonne" This work is part of a series of alligator paintings Brock made in 2007. All are painted in a somewhat similar and brash style, and are based on an incredibly vivid dream of an albino alligator with sunglasses. There were about ten in the series. Most were traded away to other artists, though one larger one was purchased from a gallery exhibition with the now defunct Buia Gallery in 2008. Kadar Brock (born May 28, 1980) is a casualist artist. He graduated in 2002 with a BFA from Cooper Union School of Art in New York City. He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Brock’s work has been reviewed in The New York Times, The Village Voice, Artforum, Bomb Magazine, The Brooklyn Rail, Interview Magazine, White Hot Magazine and Dazed and Confused, W Magazine, Bloomberg News, and Cultured Magazine. Brock first creates relatively conventional large abstract paintings, which one commentator describes as "happy". These are then "negated and disenchanted" by a long process including adding layers, scraping, puncturing, and slicing. The results of this process are what Brock exhibits. He also incorporates fragments of such canvasses into the surfaces of other works. W Magazine wrote that Brock was "... best known for his unorthodox approach to abstract painting, in which he creates frenetic, gestural images and then renders them unrecognizable with the help of a razor blade and a power sander." Marina Cashdan wrote: "His studio is an ecosystem—and an efficient one—in which the artist’s methodical and ritualistic process makes for a consistent upcycling of materials across the space: when he spray-paints, he uses a canvas as the drop cloth; that canvas becomes the start of a painting; and that painting has two fates: one sliding door is going under the razor and the industrial sander, before being coated with layers of pigments and primed, sanded, and primed, a process repeated until the desired effect is reached; the other fate is to be martyred into chips or dust." Stephan Cox, in Hunted Projects: In Dialogue wrote: "What’s fascinating is that Brock’s works are the product of an artist who aims to demystify the gesture in painting through creating rituals that in effect eradicate the didactic artist-viewer scenario. Brock doesn’t aim to create works that are easily read as being a by-product of an artist’s expression; Brock has created a set of rituals, a rolling of dice, where he, in effect has his actions directed for him. This could be through the number of brush strokes to apply or the number of cuts to make, in all, his intuitive approach to painting is not present or discernible to the viewer." In Kadar Brock’s large-scale abstract paintings, a discordant combination of techniques, styles, and colors comes together in clashing tension. By turns described as a post-graffiti and “casualist” artist, Brock riffs on the history of abstraction, employing old tropes and marshalling simple patterns and crude geometric forms into his works, while also inviting an element of chance to determine his markings. He has explored the loose, gestural, and expressive idea of abstraction in the works of German painters like Albert Oehlen and Gerhard Richter, and He has been known to roll a Dungeons & Dragons dice to dictate marks in his paintings according to the die’s symbols and numbers. In repetitive compositions, Brock allows accidents in their production (such as heavy downward paint drips) to differentiate. In 2013, Brock had his breakout solo show in New York, at The Hole, entitled “dredge.” The entire main gallery space was filled with new paintings. The show very quickly sold out. He has exhibited at galleries internationally, with solo shows at Vigo Gallery...
