Theophilus Chima
Adaeze The Princess

2022

About the Item

This piece was inspired by the story of Adaeze the Princess of Odumga Kingdom. King Odumga, the Akaogun 1 of Odumga Kingdom was a very strong and powerful king, who fought many wars and conquered many cities, towns, and kingdoms. He founded the Kingdom of Odumga and named it after himself Odumga, hence the name, ODUMGA KINGDOM. He had many wives and many sons but only one daughter. He loved his only daughter so much and decided to give her the best care he could afford in life. The King gave all the Children including ADAEZE the best Education that was obtainable in his days. Unlike other kings who refused their daughters access to Education. They believed that girls if trained will only end up being another man's wife. But King Odumga had different beliefs on Girl Child Education.  ADAEZE Studied Midwifery in America and got the most excellent result in her field of Midwifery. She had an exceptional gift of love and care for Women and Children. This gift was the driving force for her passion for Midwifery. But in America, there was strong Racism then against the black race. On her graduation day, she was denied the chance to give a speech despite her most excellent result, simply because she is a black girl. Other students who did not get up to her excellency in their field of Midwifery were selected to give a speech, this action angered ADAEZE so much and she could not hide her annoyance as she protested openly, an action that no other black girl has ever tried. When she was noticed, they threatened her with punishment but she could not stop, rather she raised her voice more. Then the Authorities agreed to give her just 5 minutes to present her speech. As she mounted the podium, hear what she said: "My name is Adaeze Odumga,  I am bold I am black I am beautiful. How can some people deny me my right simply because of my God-given Color? When God created me he said "behold you are very good" She referred them to the Holy Bible (Genesis 1:31) How can you condemn who God said is very good? The same God that made you, has made me and said that I Adaeze am very good. I am Black. I am bold. I am learned, to defend the Woman folk, the women at the time of giving birth, the Children, yes Children unborn.  To defend the children, who newly arrived in the World. To serve humanity and to serve God I am Adaeze Odumga I am black and I am beautiful" She barely finished saying I am beautiful when the audience roared with a great shout to applaud her for her wonderful speech others for her boldness and some for her excellent performance. She gently gave a smile, waved her hands, and took a gentle bow before she hit the bar. So this is the ADAEZE THE PRINCESS. She is Bold She is Black She is Beautiful She is African AFRICA IS BEAUTIFUL. Ships in a well-protected tube from Nigeria This work is unique, not a print or other type of copy. • Portrait of Theophilus
    Located in Ibadan, Oyo
Ganiyat Abdulazeez, a contemporary Nigerian artist, has created many notable works of art that capture the beauty and complexity of the human form. Among her most striking pieces is "Portrait of Theophilus," a painting that captures the essence of a man with a cap, who exudes both confidence and vulnerability. The portrait is executed in a style that is typical of Abdulazeez's work, featuring bold and vivid colors that are applied with loose, impressionistic brushstrokes. The colors in the painting are warm and earthy, with a predominantly brown and pink, and red color scheme that creates a sense of warmth and intimacy. The subject of the painting, Theophilus, is a young man with a cap that partially obscures his face. His expression is one of quiet contemplation, with a hint of a smile on his lips that suggests a sense of humor and lightness of spirit. The pose of the figure is relaxed, with his head tilted slightly to the side and his shoulders hunched forward, creating a sense of intimacy and vulnerability. What sets "Portrait of Theophilus" apart from other portraits is its emotional depth. The figure's relaxed pose and warm color scheme create a sense of intimacy that invites the viewer to connect with the subject on a personal level. The viewer is drawn into the painting, invited to consider the complexities and contradictions that exist within the figure's inner world. The painting is also notable for its simplicity. The figure is depicted against a background, with no distracting elements or contextual details to distract from the essence of the figure. This minimalist approach allows the viewer to focus on the details of the subject's expression, posture, and clothing, all of which contribute to the overall impression of the figure. Overall, "Portrait of Theophilus" is a masterful work of art that captures the essence of a man with a cap in all his complexity and vulnerability. It is a testament to Ganiyat's skill as an artist, and to her ability to create paintings that are both aesthetically pleasing and emotionally resonant. Whether viewed as a portrait or as a study of the human form, this painting is sure to leave a lasting impression on those who see it. Can we please lay out the tables now? Can we allow the days? Once more permit the rivers and oceans to lie in their beds? May I close my eyes and reach out, breathing normally again, certain that the sky is filled with birds, and that you will remain? Or shall we send me back into the grey-blue chambers of disconnection and hollow ambition? A strange card to the wail of the unseen host, somewhere in Africa across the fields, turning over an unfortunate card and laying them slickly in the firelight, winking in such dark, knowing eyes. I was passing at some distance, circled and charmed to all ends, painting the figure in place of any other kind of sustenance, yet distracted and possessed by one who would undoubtedly deny it. One who would claim to have never had my name. Shipping Procedure Ships in a well-protected tube from Nigeria This work is unique, not a print or other type of copy.
