A very delicately painted small scale portrait on marble of a handsome young gentleman. Superb detail and colour - a very striking piece and a rare example of a work by this first rate artist whose work is held by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. One of two works we are selling by the artist.

In 1845, Thomas Carrick received a medal from the Prince Consort for inventing the method of painting on marble. He was a friend of Charles Dickens, Samuel Lover & Walter Jerrold, and included among his sitters Thomas Allom, Charles Kean, Daniel O'Connell, Samuel Rogers, William Wordsworth & Longfellow.
Thomas Heathfield Carrick, miniature painter, grew up in Carlisle, where he trained and traded as a chemist, painting miniatures in his spare time. He became renowned in the district for his portraits, including one of the actor Charles Kean. In 1836 he moved to Newcastle upon Tyne, and after a few years relocated to London, where he exhibited his work at the Royal Academy from 1841 to 1866.
His work can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, The Laing Art Gallery and the National Library of Wales.
