American Midwest Regional Portrait Oil Painting, Circle of Grant Wood, ca 1940’s

About the Item

Create a statement or focal piece for a room. This is a very stylized portrait of a woman dating to the 1940’s. She fills the canvas with her wholesome countenance, hair and period clothing. The background beyond suggests the Midwest with patterned farming. It is a very unusual portrait for its period and it fully suggests strong influence from Grant Wood or other American regional artists of the period. The flatness of the landscape also suggests the Midwest. The painting is very well done. The woman has a very kind and wholesome face and her clothing is nicely detailed, right down to the sheen of her blouse. Her pose is confident. The style and colors of her clothing were popular in the 1940’s. Most striking is the stylized farming landscaped background that attests to the sitter’s whereabouts. This could very well be a portrait from Iowa, Kansas, Missouri or thereabouts. It seems after the Dust Bowl or Depression era and appears to exude prosperity and contentment. The work is oil on canvas and measures 26” wide x 28” high. It has been recently cleaned, repaired and vanished. The repairs were minor and can be seen in the reverse photo. It comes in what may have been its original simple painted wood frame. Overall framed dimensions are 30 1/2” x 32 1/2”. Both painting and frame show beautifully and are ready to hang on the wall to be enjoyed.

There is a reason why there are few contemporary painters who can paint a portrait this good. It's hard to do. It's easy to throw some paint or spray a mess of graffiti on canvas. That's easy art. Executing a portrait with a great depth of anatomy and structure takes years of academic training. In Riggs's time, there were teachers who knew how to pass on this knowledge. He studied at the Art Students League and the Académie Julian . Today, they are very few and far between.
