This mid-century expressive and emotive oil portrait delves into the depths of the human psyche with an intriguing depiction of a male figure in a brown shirt.
The face of the figure appears slightly distorted, contributing to an atmosphere of unease and ambiguity. Through the semi-abstract portrayal, the artist captures the complex and often contradictory nature of human emotions and thoughts.
The painting’s expressive brushwork is forceful and emotive, adding layers of intensity to the composition. Reminiscent of the works of Irish-born British figurative painter Francis Bacon (1909-1992), the piece explores themes of inner turmoil.
This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary gilt frame. The painting has light craquelure at its top right section but the paint layer is stable. The frame edges have some losses but this is in keeping with its overall distressed vintage style.
