About the Item

Born in La Habana, Cuba Ramon Alejandro is prominently featured in the new book "Memoria- Cuban art of the 20th Century", and the noted author Guillermo Cabrera Infante is quoted in the segment on Alejandro, as saying: "It must be said that Alejandro began by cultivating a surreal sadism cobbled together from puyas and pullas, barbs and curse words, which in Cuba are completely synonymous. But the painter quickly saw the light and opened the papaya that Wifredo Lam had always found closed, it's great lips sealed, closed tight. Alejandro's papayas are candid, open, and present just the opposite of an infabulation: an offering of love and humor. Ramon Alejandro. "In 1960 things were looking black in Cuba and I was getting restless." These are the reasons the painter Ramon Alejandro gave for his departure into exile in a long letter in which he also described the enthusiasms and doubts he had experienced in the course of his intellectual formation. Alejandro was born in Havana in 1943. On his mother's side there were three painters in the family-the grandfather, a great-grandfather, and an uncle all of whom had been active in Cuba in the late eighteen hundreds and the early years of the present century. Paintings by the grandfather and the uncle hung in the family parlor, and these, together with the uncle's conversation, provided the boy with his first notions of art. The uncle's example was particularly significant, for most of the grandfather work consisted of copies of works in the Prado Museum that had been left behind in Spain. Given the situation described in Alejandro's above-mentioned letter, in 1960 his father entrusted him to the care of an aunt in Buenos Aires. There he enrolled in the School of Fine Arts but soon transferred to the institution across the river in Montevideo, were he took courses in printmaking. Curious about other countries, the young man ventured into Brazil. He traveled all over the State of Minas Gerais, rich in colonial art of the baroque period, and in Sao Paulo he came upon a number of master pieces of European art. From Rio de Janeiro he went on to Barcelona and, after seeing all t hat Spain had to offer, in 1963 he settled down in Paris, where he resided until 1995, at which point he moved to Miami, where he resides, to this day. From 1968 to 1981 Alejandro had seven one-man shows at private galleries in Paris, Geneva, and Miami, the one in the last-mentioned city constituting his sole individual presentation in the United States to date. He has participated in more than three dozen art shows in Europe, in cities ranging from Brussels and Liege in Belgium, and Rome, Milan, Bologna, and Bolzano in Italy, to Belgrade, Skopje, and NoviSad in Yugoslavia, in addition to one in Jerusalem. In 1966, 1969, 1970 and 1971 he was invited to take part in the "Comparisons" Salons in Paris, and in 1971 and 1972 he exhibited at the May Salons in the same city He was a participant in the first exhibit of erotic art ever to be staged, presented in 1968 by the museums of Lund, Sweden, and Aarhus, Denmark, and in the show entitled "Erotic and Obscene Images" that was put on at the Images Gallery in Paris in 1974. Alejandro has contributed to a number of book exhibitions devoted to limited editions illustrated by artists of note. Alejandro's recent work is characterized by poetic nostalgia. Amid landscapes bounded by distant cliffs, remote mountains, or calm seas there rise vast stone constructions which, like the mysterious monuments based in the Hindu principle of the mandala, have openings to each of the four points of the compass. They seem to be illustrations for works of science fiction or visions of a world of sheer illusion. Each element is defined in detail by the sure, skilled hand of a mature artist, constantly on the advance, whose creations exert a beguiling effect upon the viewer.

During 1970, working at the University of Havana, Jorge is assigned as a cartoonist in the Department of Animation and Design. This audiovisual media center had an extensive graphic library, where Jorge discovered what would later become the goals of his creativity and his artistic motivation for life. Among the publications of the IDEA magazine that he used in everyday work as a cartoonist and animator he found articles and paintings by the Hungarian-French Optical Art artist 'Victor Vasarely' (1906-1997). From this work the personal challenge and inspiration of the artist Jorge Garcia was born. With his natural talent to recognize drawing lines, the abstraction of the figure, and the tones and contrasts of light and volume, Jorge was satisfactorily accepted within the group of artist who worked in the center as animators. In 1971 he ventured as an optical artist with the work called "Interference I" at a local contest of his municipality. Competing alongside works by renowned Cuban artists such as Nelson Dominguez, Orlando Lara and Roberto Fabelo, in the galleries of The National Museum of Fine Arts, "Interference I" was successfully exhibited for more than 5 months, as part of the "VI Juvenile Hall of Plastic Arts "and its success led to the birth of an artist, JorGar. JorGar continued in such fashion, difficult to explain, beyond being understood, a creator of many works whose complexity can only be observed through abstraction and the vigilant game of interpretation, which conform to the pleasures of the restless space and the transformation of volume. In 1975 he exhibited with a group of artists in the “Talía” salon of the University of Havana. That same year he won the 1st place of this exhibition with his work "Dawn". In 1976 he was entrusted by the magazine "Alma Mater" for the creation of an allegorical work of the birth of the Cuban master...

Carmelo Niño Carolina niña con Marina, 2021 Acrylic on canvas 350 x 200 cm 137.7 x 78.7 in. The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. Carmelo Niño, a Venezuelan artist originally from Maracaibo, Zulia State, an oil-producing region of Venezuela, is today one of the most outstanding painters in the plastic arts landscape in the country. Many years have passed since his birth in 1951 to the present, when he inaugurates this August 2022, a major exhibition at the Ascaso Gallery in Miami, with paintings from different dates resulting from the permanent and daily work of reflection, physical and intellectual, that he has always pursued in his creative life. Without neglecting a single moment of day-to-day life to be in front of the medium-sized canvas on the easel or of larger canvas hanging on a wall, he works in his large studio in the area of El Junco, outside the capital city of Caracas, surrounded by lush green vegetation, with a wonderful climate of pleasant temperature and poetic mist that invites to the reverie and glorification of his life as a painter. From a very early age Niño and his family discovered his vocation for drawing, a discipline in which he showed a special disposition and talent. From this moment on he dedicates his life to art, to the practice of painting, starting from a fantastic and strange world of fantasy, close to surrealism, unfailingly influenced by the circus of fantasy owned by his mother and a musician father. These circumstances will shape the artist's life. His traces and influences from the beginning will be present in his creative work, especially through the memories of the infinite curiosity to look, touch and be enraptured by the strange furniture and objects from his mother's circus that he knew were deposited in a room of the house. This universe of fantasy will leave an indelible mark on his subconscious and will serve as the thematic and artistic support for all his work. In an interview conducted by the critic Roberto Montero Castro in 1977, Carmelo Niño states, "the symbols of my painting come from the everyday life". His life has been one of continuous work and effort. At the age of fifteen he enrolled in the School of Arts of Maracaibo, graduated three years later, 1966, and immediately, with a scholarship, he travelled to Spain, took a few courses at the San Fernando Academy in Madrid, strengthened his preparation in art workshops and in frequent visits to the big museums of this European capital. With a sensitive gaze he penetrates the mysteries of masterpieces of the great artists who have made the universal history of art. His life as a painter has been intense, of intense study, preparation and work. With much composure and modesty he talks about his life and his artistic production, recognized not only in Venezuela, but also internationally. His participation in exhibitions began in 1969 and as early as 1970 he held his first individual exhibition at the Fine Arts Center of Maracaibo. From these dates onwards successes started to come, with the participation in collective and individual exhibitions, in Venezuela and abroad, as well as the awards from 1971, when he won the Scholarship Award at the First National Salon of Young Artists in Maracay, Aragua State; in 1972 he was awarded the Second Prize at the Regional Salon of Maracaibo. 1975 is the year of awards, he received the First Prize at the IV Salon of Young Artists in Caracas; the Aurelio Rodriguez Award at the IV Avellan Salon in Caracas and the First Prize at the Salon of Young Zulian Artists in Maracaibo; he also participated in the group exhibition of History of Painting in Venezuela, at Casa de Las Americas, Havana, Cuba; and in 1976 he was invited by Jose Gomez Sicre to take part in the exhibition of Venezuelan painting...

  • On Silverlode Road
    By Jonas Fisch
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
Swedish artist Jonas Fisch’s imagery is vibrantly buzzing with colorful commentary on society - past and present - morphed into figures, words, and shapes. His heavily layered canvases are the foundations of a new visual dialogue. Fisch paints with a jazz-like spontaneity, expressing personal emotions, commenting on contemporary society, and exploring old mythologies. Formulating a galaxy of the unknown, Fisch’s textural paintings flood the mind with possibility. His process is instinctive and organic, the paintings energetic and vibrant, emerging from his subconscious without judgment. They are constructed by feelings trying to find harmony. Endless figures, messages, layers, and symbols move in and out of focus as the eye explores his puzzle pieces with varied solutions. Jonas Fisch created this large colorful 93-inch tall by 67-inch wide painting with mixed media. acrylic, and oil stick on canvas. This artwork is stretched and is ready to hang. It is signed by the artist on the back of the painting. This artwork does not require framing. Free delivery is available for those in the local Los Angeles area, and affordable worldwide shipping is available for US and international art collectors. A certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery is included with the artwork, ensuring that the piece is an authentic work of art from Jonas Fisch. Born in a small fisherman's village in southern Sweden, contemporary artist Jonas Fisch discovered his love for drawing and painting at a young age and was inspired to pursue his passion by renowned artist and grandmother Ann-Marie Sjögren. Fisch reflects, “As a fundamentally introspective person, I have an explosive need to express and communicate my innermost rays, reflections, and shadows. The canvas, the brush, and the paint allow me to act out, throw up, confront, and examine those innermost feelings. Painting becomes my outlet. At a certain moment, each shape, stroke, and color suddenly takes over and the painting reveals itself. It becomes an expressive personal collaboration of art." Fisch's artworks have been exhibited across the United States, Switzerland, and Hong Kong. His paintings can be found in private collections worldwide.
