About the Item
To See Inside: Examining Prison Architecture includes eight paintings of prison spaces by Sarah McKenzie, as well as artwork and creative writing by eighteen artists affiliated with the University of Denver Prison Arts Initiative (DU PAI). Collectively they reflect on the places and spaces of the US prison system and its impact on the people confined within it.
McKenzie received the 2021 Marion International Fellowship for the Visual and Performing Arts, through which she was able to spend eighteen months researching and photographing prison architecture, interviewing people about their experiences inside the US carceral system, and creating a new series of paintings exploring these institutional spaces that are largely hidden away from mainstream society.
Her work led her to begin teaching with the University of Denver Prison Arts Initiative, an extraordinary program that offers a range of arts-based programming throughout the Colorado Department of Corrections. For this exhibition, McKenzie presents her paintings in conversation with artworks and creative writings by eighteen incarcerated artists, all of whom she has met through her work with DU PAI.

Sarah McKenzie is a painter based in Boulder, Colorado. She holds a BA in film studies from Yale University and an MFA in painting from the University of Michigan. McKenzie’s paintings document our built landscape, exploring changes in our architecture (what we build) for evidence of social, economic, and cultural shifts (why we build). Over time, her work has focused on construction sites, abandoned buildings, hotel rooms, and (most recently) the white-walled interiors of museums and galleries. Since early 2020 she has been researching a new project exploring the architecture of prisons. McKenzie has exhibited her paintings nationally, including shows with the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, the Yale School of Architecture, the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe, the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, the Aspen Art Museum, and the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art, among other venues. In 2012, McKenzie received a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Grant, and in 2019, she was awarded the 10th Alexander Rutsch Award for Painting. In Spring 2021, McKenzie received the Marion International Fellowship for the Visual and Performing Arts to support her prison architecture series. When she is not in the studio, McKenzie helps to run Tilt West, a Denver-based arts and culture nonprofit, and she teaches visual art through the University of Denver Prison Arts Initiative (DU PAI).

Style : Pratul Dash is a conscientious human being who believes that the most vital role of an artist is to work towards uplifting society. Born in rural Orissa, Dash grew up enjoying the openness of landscapes untouched by man. New Delhi however, came as a rude awakening to the artist, who spent over a year in the bustling metropolis while pursuing his Master’s degree at the College of Art there. After experiencing first-hand the deteriorating state of natural landscapes, Dash became more and more concerned with the rate at which expanding cities were invading open spaces. His works reflect his concerns about the environment as well as his own experiences as a man from a simple town, leading a simple life, thrown unprepared into the chaos of urban spaces. On close examination, the viewer can sense the pain caused by this displacement of the self and the physical body, and the struggle of trying to exist in as familiar land as a rightful citizen rather than a refugee. About the Artist and his work : Born : 1974, Orissa. Education : 1995 - Bachelor’s degree from the B.K.
