André VAGH WEINMANN
Large Scale French Oil on Canvas Still Life of Flowers, Tulips, Iris and Lillies

1963

About the Item

Large scale French still life of a vase with flowers by André Vagh Weinmann. The painting is signed and dated bottom right. Presented in a very fine patinated wood frame. An imposing and charming still life of a yellow glazed earthenware jar filled with an abundance of beautiful blooms, tulips, lillies, irises, and poppies amongst others. Weinmann has set the scene against a dark backdrop so that all the colours of the flowers really 'pop' from the canvas. He has used an impasto technique to give depth and texture to the surface. A really magnificent addition and talking point to any interior. André VAGH WEINMANN was born into a family of artists and always had a vocation to paint. Living in an artistic environment, he drew and painted instinctively from childhood. Living with his family in Paris His father's career took the family to Paris. He preferred to frequent the Louvre Museum, the Salons, the Galleries and especially the Académie de la Grande Chaumière rather than continue his education as a medical student. He travelled and exhibited extensively in France: Toulouse, Strasbourg, Biarritz, Castres and Agen (where one of his canvases is held in the museum collection.) In Paris there were acquisitions of his works for national collections in 1956 and 1961. Internationally he exhibited in Hungary (Budapest and Szeged) which was a great artistic success with the purchase, by the Hungarian State of a canvas for the French collection of the National Museum of Budapest. In 1969 he undertook, with his father the creation of a municipal school of Fine Arts in Digne which exists to this day.

  • Large Early 20th Century Oil on Canvas of Tulips Displayed in a Confit Jar.
    Located in Cotignac, FR
Large early 20th century French oil on canvas of tulips displayed in a confit jar. Signed Jean Julien to the bottom left and presented in a period frame. A rather charming and romantic impression of a tulip display. The colour palette is soft and gentle, light and airy and the artist has managed to impart to the whole painting a chalky texture which gives the impression of soft focus. The tulips are delicately painted but with great precision and attention to detail. The artist has thought carefully about both the scale and the shape of the image. The elongated rectangle is a perfect fit for the long ranging tulip stems. A thoroughly charming painting. Jean Pierre Louis Joseph Julien was a French painter born in Marseille on the 12th of May 1888. Julien was a member of the Salon des Artistes Français, friend of Marcel Pagnol, Fernandel, Raimu and Tino Rossi. Guy Dornand called him “the ambassador of Provence in Paris”. Between the wars, he stayed in Italy, travelled to North Africa and designed posters for tourism, murals and theatre sets, while remaining faithful to his hometown. He was a member of the 'Association des Marseillais de Paris.' along with his colleague Auguste Durand-Rosé. In 1933 Emmanuel Pontremoli, director of the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts proposed a design project for a school in Rue Saint-Martin, Paris. Several artists were given the chance to compete for this opportunity. Jean Julien impressed and was given the task. Julien taught at the School of Fine Arts in Paris and was also a drawing teacher at the Polytechnic School. Jean Julien died in Sanary-sur-Mer on the 5th of September 1974.
