Art Tatin
A Mango, Oil Painting

2023

About the Item

Artist Comments
A ripe mango on a wooden slab is set against a dark background, enhancing its luminosity. The skillful use of light and shadow adds a dramatic dimension to the artwork, giving a profound sense of beauty to an ordinary fruit. Painted with Flemish techniques, the process involves building the image through multiple layers of paint, adding richness and detail to its finish.

About the Artist
Artist Art Tatin creates realistic still-life compositions inspired by classical techniques and masters. After years of exploring surrealist and abstract styles earlier in his career, he discovered true artistic satisfaction and inspiration by returning to traditional painting methods. In pursuit of grace, he draws his reference material from his neighbor's flower bed, a bird's song, or a produce aisle. "In our hectic and stressful modern lives, when we often overlook beauty, I make it my goal to capture it," says Art. He emphasizes the importance of composition in his creative process, considering the relationships between objects, colors, and angles. While Art doesn't have a traditional studio, he separates workspaces to control dust and lint, which is crucial to keeping foreign particles away from his works. Beyond painting, he enjoys reading, watching movies, sitcoms, and tending to his home and backyard.

  • The Green Arrow, Oil Painting
    By Jose H. Alvarenga
    Located in San Francisco, CA

    Artist Comments
In classical vintage style, artist Jose H. Alvarenga imposes his spin on still-life pieces with an action figure on top of lettered toy blocks. "I bought the whole collection of the DC comic characters and decided to paint this figurine of the Green Arrow," narrates Jose. He paints variations of green through neutralizing, brightening, and blending. Jose colors a block red for a complete contrast opposite to green.

    About the Artist
Jose’s soft still life paintings are like visual puns. He creates relationships between objects that evoke both amusement and contemplation in the viewer. By devising a clever dialogue between objects, Jose turns a still life into a story. Jose utilizes a classical realist style with a gentle nod to surrealism through his unique subject selections. He is inspired by everyday objects, particularly those with a quality of nostalgia, memory, or humor. Jose paints out of his Los Angeles area apartment, where he also enjoys playing the keyboard and reading art books.
