About the Item

This is an original unique oil painting by the artist. Still Life of Poppies in a Blue and White Vase by Fernand Toussaint (1873 – 1955). Oil on canvas, signed F Toussaint (lower left), from the Property of a Lady. Fernand Toussaint was born in Brussels in 1873 to an upper-middle class family who quickly recognised his artistic talents from an early age. Supporting him to develop these talents further, Toussaint enrolled with Jean-François Portrayals at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts at the young age of 15. Toussaint moved to Paris at the age of 18 to continue his studies. He was first noticed in the art world for his beautiful portrayal of upper-middle class women; as inspired by his upbringing, bringing his work to life by depicting these women wearing the latest fashions. Toussaint mastered multiple different styles to portray his work, including; impressionism, art nouveau and post-impressionist styles whilst using mediums such as oil, water-colours and posters. He is also renowned for his floral still life’s and interiors, as well as coastal views and seascapes. The Belgian art critic Camille Lemonnier noted that Toussaint was “one of the painters that broadened the horizon of the peaceful and intimate landscape.” In his time Toussaint was awarded the Order of Leopold; the highest order of Belgian knighthood.
