About the Item
This stunning British Victorian floral still life is by 19th century born artist Henry John Livens. Painted in 1880, the setting for this colourful floral arrangement is the forest floor and bank with wild violets growing amongst the moss and leaves. Various clusters of flowers of primroses and apple blossom lie on the forest floor. There is also a basket of roses and a terracotta pot of mixed heather beyond. Amongst all this floral beauty to the left is a mossy bird's nest with eggs. A really vibrant example of a British Victorian floral still life in a natural setting with superb detail and brushwork.
Signed and dated 1880 lower right.
Provenance. Wiltshire estate.
Condition. Oil on canvas, 24 inches by 20 inches and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in an ornate gilt frame, 31 inches by 27 inches and in good condition.
Henry John Livens (1848-1943) was a direct descendant of Jan Liebens of Holland. Jan Liebens left to go to London to paint the portrait of the King, some time in the 1600's. Livens, born in 1848 was a British artist of landscapes and still lifes active in London. He died in 1943.

Henry John Livens
Henry John Livens was born in 1858, in St Pancras, London the direct descendant of Jan Liebens who had left his native Holland in the 1600’s to paint a portrait of the King and subsequently settled in London. The name was anglicised over the years to become Livens. Livens married Sarah Waller in 1878 with whom he had 4 children: Bert, Amie, George and Rosie. Amie later joined a Convent at Finchley and became known as the ‘Painting Nun’, signing her works Sister Mary Etheldreda. By 1886, he was living in Watford with his family and by 1901 had moved to Hammersmith. Livens painted landscapes and still life and travelled extensively throughout the UK painting views of Wales, the Scottish Highlands and Surrey. Around 1911 he settled in Winchcombe, Gloucestershire with his wife Sarah and his two daughters where he lived until his death in 1933. A number of his works are held by South Ayrshire Council.

This painting is a fantastic example of Stannard's work and clearly shows how well she deserved her superb reputation as being one of the most accomplished female 19th century still life painters. She was associated with the Norwich School of painters, Britain's first provincial art movement. Along with her niece Eloise Harriet Stannard, she is considered to be the most accomplished British female still life artist of the 19th century. Stannard was born in Norwich of artistic parents. In 1820, she travelled with her father Daniel Coppin to the Netherlands to study the paintings of Jan van Huysum and other Dutch masters, an episode which influenced her artistic style.
