Flowers. 1986. Oil on cardboard, 72x46 cm Janis Kalnmalis (1939) Received professional education in the LVM of Riga department of decoration and graduated in 1960, and department of painting in AAL, graduated in 1967; Diploma work "Tractor drivers" (head of diploma E. Kalnins). He participates in exhibitions since 1968. Solo exhibitions in Aizpute, Jurmala, Liepaja, Auce, Vecauce, Riga, Valmiera, Finland (Tauluja). Since 1979, member of the Artists` Union of Latvia. Follower of realistic depiction manner, works in all genres, mainly in oil technique. The figural compositions repeatedly turned to the theme of sport, but most of the works in the genre of landscape. One of the few artists of his generation, who paint directly outside, creating laconic compositions in saturated, heavy coloring, where a lot of attention is given to brushstrokes, dense texture. He also work in monumental painting, made interiors, worked in publishing and book design.
