Kaoru Mansour
Trumpet Flower and Nap #101

2015

About the Item

A painting by Kaoru Mansour. "Trumpet Flower and Nap #101" is a contemporary mixed media piece, acrylic, paper, 22K gold leaf, pen, glitter, and thread on canvas in a palette of blue and cream by Japanese, female artist Kaoru Mansour. Kaoru Mansour, a native of Japan, is an artist based in Los Angeles. Her artwork has varied over the last ten years, ranging from geometric abstract paintings on paper to her more recent botanical collage elements on wooden panels. Delicately colored organic forms are covered with twenty to thirty different layers of encaustic, which gives her work a rich and highly textured appearance. Mansour grew up in a small mountainous village. She has vivid, early childhood memories of playing with, studying and even eating the tremendous varieties of seasonal plants in the lush forests of Japan. As she began her formal training as an artist at Otis Parsons Art Institute in Los Angeles, the impact of her previous natural surroundings emerged. While her work has evolved over the years, botanical imagery, whether actual or abstracted, has always figured in her work. Mansour’s current body of work connects images of plants with abstract mark making. The artist goes into her physical surroundings to gather plants and flowers - whatever she finds of interest during a particular season. She then transfers images of single specimens onto panels - whether it is a leaf, the whole plant or just a portion of a flower - the image is always simple and solitary. A muted, butter-like background holds the image which is glazed over to form a cracked, raku-like surface - a small gesture to her Japanese heritage. Mansour then draws colored circles and other small ink markings on the panels, enhancing the fundamental beauty of a single branch or stem. These simple, focused pieces elegantly integrate graphic and organic expressions. While the viewer may recognize a particular type of plant or flower, the image is always simplified - a flower stripped of leaves, a stem without its main branch or a sturdy stalk detached from the ground. Her compositions crop those “extraneous” elements from the picture plane to emphasize the abstract beauty and remarkable form of her chosen specimen. Her delicate markings swirl around and attach to the delicate branches, creating new, otherworldly plant forms that are at once astute with their precision and wonderfully whimsical.

  • Castilleja cruenta standl
    By Penelope Gottlieb
    Located in Palm Desert, CA
A painting by Penelope Gottlieb. "Castilleja cruenta standl" is a contemporary painting, ink, acrylic and oil on canvas panel in a variety of bright, bold colors by American artist Penelope Gottlieb. After receiving her BFA from the Art Center College for Design in Pasadena, Penelope Gottlieb went on to earn her MFA from the University of California in Santa Barbara where she currently lives and works. Gottlieb’s artistic repertoire is thoroughly modern and includes innovative paintings as well as compelling media design, for which she received an Emmy in the field of motion picture title design in 1993. Gottlieb’s more recent works showcase a unique synthesis of her modern graphic design background and the vintage botanical renderings of natural scientists. However, her paintings are also unique in their perspective on the traditional floral still life. Stylized flora and fauna are depicted as emanating from a comic book explosion, illustrating what the artist refers to as “the dire state of the planet” as faced with species extinction and the resulting biological and ecological ramifications. These violent representations of the artistically typified placid natural world are intended as “visual eulogies for lost plant life.” The particular specimens that Gottlieb depicts are in fact extinct and she is able to recreate them only from historical drawings and botanist’s descriptions. Although avant-garde and aesthetically unique, Gottlieb’s paintings delineate clear influences from the renowned artists of Pop and Expressionist art. The composition of many of her paintings is reminiscent of Kandinsky’s canvas-filling outpours while her bold color palette and black outlines recall Lichtenstein’s comic book panels. Her work is also closely related to a more contemporary group of artists, including Alexis Rockman...

    By Audrey Anastasi
    Located in Brooklyn, NY
This small-scale, slightly textured, intimate painting could be a Hanukkah or Christmas gift. Audrey Frank Anastasi is a prolific a visual artist, curator, gallerist, educator, philanthropist, and arts advocate. She works primarily in 2-dimensional mediums: painting, drawing, collage, mixed media, focusing on the human subject. Most of Ms. Anastasi's figurative works are painted with her non-dominant left hand. She has created large bodies of works of birds, animals and birch trees. She has exhibited in over 20 solo & 200 group shows. Her original “ref-u-gee” series of forced-migration–themed artwork was shown in a solo exhibition from October, 2022 through January, 2023 at the Brooklyn College library gallery in collaboration with the Valentine Museum of Art (VMoA.) Accompanying the show, a limited-edition monograph with over 180 images of passport sized paintings, four 8 foot tall works on panels, and a foreword by Phyllis Braff. The book was printed in 2023 by SIZ Industria Grafica, Verona, Italy. Additional book and catalog publications include "Stations of the Cross", SPQR press, with an essay by Amir Bey, BREUCKELEN magazine, “Audrey Frank Anastasi” catalog with an essay by renowned feminist art critic Cindy Nemser, and "Collage" with an essay by Giancarlo T. Roma. Born in a predominantly Jewish suburb of Baltimore, Maryland, Audrey was always drawn to art. Her parents had an innate sense of style. Her father's side of the family were immigrant merchants. They owned what was called, in those days, a junior department store. Audrey’s father would arrange creative window displays. And he was a snappy dresser, looking surprisingly elegant in his patterned or pastel sports jackets. Audrey’s mother, on the other hand, came from a more rural upbringing. Although her maternal grandmother was from Eastern Europe, her maternal grandfather was born in the USA. “Mr. Jew Arthur,” as he was referred to by locals, owned a tavern in a predominantly African-American community, Fairfield, Maryland. Not only did he sell spirits, he definitely partook of them, as well. While still a teenager, Audrey’s mother, Rose Gussie, changed her name to Joyce and headed to Atlanta, Georgia, and later to New York City to be a cosmetician and hosiery model. She also had an impeccable sense of style. And in her picture albums, beside the photographs, were pages upon pages of charming ink drawings of stylish ladies. Of her own formative years, Audrey expresses, “I'm forever grateful that when I was a child, my mother indulged me with regular outings to the library where I emerged with armloads of books, and weekly visits to the Baltimore Museum of Art. There I would pass the gorgeous bust of Queen Nefertiti and the scary mummies on the way to my art lessons. There isn't a single moment of my conscious life when I didn't think of myself as an artist.” Audrey also studied with a local artist, “Miss Mary,” who soon asked Audrey to become a teaching assistant, instructing other students how to observe shapes and tonalities, while faithfully drawing charcoal drawings of classical plaster casts...
