About the Item

Represented by George Billis Gallery, NYC & LA -- This work is about what I do while I write letters and think about all these urgent, global concerns and feel frustrated and powerless. I drink coffee. I drink a lot of coffee. It’s a constant in my life. I drink it to think. I drink it to comfort. I drink it to celebrate. I drink it to socialize. I drink it to transition from one thing to another. I drink it to kill time. There are lots of rituals involving coffee. Americans take possession of their coffee, complete with specific brands or brews for different times and places. I wonder if there is any connection between global issues and our private, automatic behaviors, like drinking coffee. Sometimes it helps me to focus on what’s right in front of me, paint it and try to understand what it means. Why take- out coffee cups? These cups are familiar. They are disposable, they are trash, but cataloged and rendered, they tell a story. They speak of accumulation, time, motion, location, commodity, class, recognition, discovery, even memory. It’s all about paying attention.

George Billis Gallery presents Stephanie Reiter. Painting for me is about capturing the light and beauty of the day. Usually a landscape will hit me and say, “paint me”. Then I know I must capture it. My reactions and interpretations combined with the right pigments and line express the natural beauty I am experiencing. What Cezanne called “petite sensations”, the little feeling you get from being alive...

  • "Cherries in a Strainer" Contemporary Fine Realist Still-Life Painting of Fruit
    Located in Utrecht, NL
During his successful career as a goldsmith the desire to paint grew on Dutch artist René Smoorenburg (1954). The attention to detail, which was of great importance in his work as a goldsmith, proved of great value in painting his realistic still life’s. In "Cherries in a Strainer" the artist's attention to fine detail is traceable in the way he painted the cherries. All the fine details create an effect of trompe-l'oeil, the painting is deceptive realistic. This painting depicts a very rich harvest of cherries. They're harvested during summer and therefore you can almost feel the happiness of a long and warm, carefree summer in this painting. This feeling lasts forever, thanks to Smoorenburgs incredible talent. His work stands in the long tradition of Dutch still life painting, originated in the seventeenth century, with its highly refined and meticulously executed depiction of reality. His work is in the spirit of many of those great works but retains its own distinctive style. Although René Smoorenburg works at a few paintings at the same time, the time it takes him to finish one individual painting amounts six months. Because of his very detailed style of painting, this time span is necessary to complete the work with a lot of patience and endurance. In contrast to the masters of the Golden Age, he chooses to emphasize the vulnerability, fragility and imperfection of everyday objects in his still life’s. According to René Smoorenburg, beauty is not perfection, but in the trace of the past and the evidence of enduring ravages of time. René Smoorenburg finds his sources of inspiration at antique fairs...
